I recently had a colonoscopy and everything looks good although the doctor found a residual peri-appendiceal red patch of superficial inflammation. There were various biopsy samples taken during the procedure and there are no pathologicial changes except for this area where the results indicate mild active colitis. I was curious if anyone else has ever experienced inflammation around the appendix. Did it go away on its own or did you have to make any changes to your medication? It doesn't seem to be too uncommon in proctitis patients based on what I have read and is called AOI / PARP (appendiceal orifice inflammation / peri-appendiceal red patch) aka skip lesion.

There is a known variant of UC in which inflammation involves the cecal patch & lower left segments of colon only. As I recall from past posts to this forum, the members who had it took Rx meds, usually oral + retention enemas or suppositories. / Old Hat (40 yrs with left-sided UC; in remission taking Colazal)

Thanks, I'm currently taking 75mg imuran and canasa suppositories daily and my doctor didn't mention making any changes to my meds based on the biopsy results. The last scope prior to this was a few years ago and 100% clear so am a bit disappointed - at the time, I was taking 100mg imuran but it was reduced some time ago based on a blood report. I will send a note to my doctor and ask about the meds.

Me! I had a cecal patch with general inflammation to 24 cm when I was diagnosed and had the same redness near my appendix as well. It wasn’t there in my last scope, just sign of old inflammation to 26 cm. I take colazal and imuran now and use either sfRowasa or Canasa as needed these days.

Do you have a copy of all your biopsies pathology reports? If your biopsies of that area were perfectly clear since 2013, and now they're not, it would be helpful to at least get on an oral mesalamine like Pentasa as a good start.

This might he a good read if you haven't already.

Thanks momto2boys. Honestly, I had never heard of discontinuous inflammation in UC until now (always associated that with Crohns) and in my case inflammation never went beyond the rectum so was a little confused and surprised. After the colonoscopy/biopsy results my doctor told me that everything looks good and mentioned the patch - when I asked if there was anything to be concerned about he said no and said that the next usual follow up appointment would be in 6 months and next scope after 3 years. But I plan to ask about the meds I'm taking and what his thoughts are about making any changes. I noticed in your signature that you're taking curcumin and I think I need to add curcumin and a probiotic in my daily routine now. Is there a certain brand that you like or that has helped keep your UC under control? The links below were shared by another member here when I was asking about supplements a few months ago but thought I'd ask you as well.

Thanks Quincy, yes I have copies of all my reports and that area was perfectly clear until now so of course, I'm concerned and want to figure out what I can do to keep it perfect as I've been doing really well since starting imuran 4-5 years ago. I haven't been taking any supplements for about 5 years now (was taking curcumin and VSL for a few months but stopped once my flare was under control) so am thinking I should start with those again too.

I take Life Extension super bio curcumin and Jarrow Curcumin 95, for some reason the life extension one gives me heartburn if I take it exclusively so I take one of each brand with every meal.

LFA7...what you want to do is get on oral mesalamine. When is your next scope?

Probiotics are good as well...

Hi Quincy, I will definitely mention this to my doctor.. next scope is after 3 years. I was taking Lialda + canasa supps before switching to imuran. At the time, it wasn't helping my flare at all and I still remember seeing the pills come out half or whole as if they were just passing through and not really breaking down. I haven't tried imuran + oral mesalamine combination yet.

I'm researching probiotics as I would prefer to take a pill vs powder like vsl since it's just easier for me. I think I saw some other post where you recommended Primadophilus Reuteri for those who live in the US. I noticed in your sig that you're taking 2 different types and wanted to get your opinion on that too. Thanks!

LFA7...I also give the UFCC to my cat (small amount) in her food. I alternate between the two or take together. Depends on how I feel. When I was using the Primadophilus, I took it with the UFCC.
I wouldn't take powder....and I take them only at bedtime.

Check up on New Roots....theirs contains Reuteri. I might change the two I use to that. Maybe in the new year after I check on the numbers comparison.
