Hi all,

I'm going to try Budesonide extended release 9mg for UC for only a few weeks since I developed a hypersensitivity reaction to mesalamine/balsalazide :-(

1) The only dose for budesonide/uceris extended release is 9mg in the U.S. The lower doses are entocort for chron's disease. You cannot break the capsule. Therefore, how do you taper this drug?

2) Is budesonide as tolerable as mesalamine?

Thanks!

There's no tapering required for budesonide. It's a 90 percent topical steroid, so no systematic immunosuppressive element. Typically you take budesonide for 8 weeks then quit cold-turkey.

Many say they get no side effects from budesonide. Some notice very mild steroid side effects. Varies.

I was told to take every alternate day for 2-3 weeks, then every 3rd day for 2 weeks. After that quit. If you still need it, it should be evident by the tail end of every alternate day regimen.

I was able to get it in 3mg capsules when I needed to taper down from the 9 mg ERs. In the US.
