Hey there,

I'm going on three years on Imuran at a relatively high dosage (175mg). It's currently paired with my Inflectra infusion. When we checked therapeutic levels of Imuran, it was below range. Been in remission for about year and half now and last colonoscopy was really great (no signs of active disease). GI wants me to consider coming off Imuran and just go Inflectra mono-therapy.

How long is too long on Imuran? I'm afraid if I come off it, I will flare immediately. I've posted about this before but my situation keeps changing.

Thanks,
D

If you're not getting a therapeutic level it imuran I doubt it's doing much. I've heard of people being on it 5-10 years, so 3 years not a problem, except now in covid times, together with remicade, you are double immunosuppressed which is not ideal. Personally given the choice I would stop it....

I was in a similar situation, a long term remission on 6mp and remicade simultaneously. Doctor said quit 6mp cold-turkey. I decided to drop my dose more slowly over about 8 months. Taper a bit, hold for a couple months, taper again, repeat until off. As a change in dose takes 6-8 weeks to have an affect. I figured if my symptoms regressed during my taper, then I could return to the full dose.

Generally, it takes a lot more meds to initially attain a remission than to sustain it.
