Hey there,

I'm looking to up my supplement game, especially during this pandemic. I have UC that's been in remission for almost two years now with Inflectra (just for the record). In terms of supplements, I take C, D, Zinc, Turmeric, and Omega-3.

Is there something us IBD'ers should strongly consider taking that I somehow missed? I know there's A LOT of info out there on suggested IBD supplements but I suppose my question is: what are the most popular, no-brainers we should all consider?

Thanks! smile

I think you are on the right track with your supplements. The ones that are most researched and popular seem to be turmeric/curcumin, probiotics, slippery elm, fish oil (omega 3). I also have seen studies on LDN, boswellia and Qing Dai. Some people also seem to focus on fermented foods, like saurakraut, kimchi, and kefir. I doubt you would want to take all of these though!

The effectiveness of supplements vary with each individual just like some foods and different meds affect people differently. For example boswellia has been proven to dampen down UC inflammation but it doesn't help me at all. Turmeric itself may not be strong enough but the concentrated extract from turmeric, curcumin, is proven to be as effective as mesalamines and it works for me.

Here is something that you haven't mentioned in your post but is one of my 'wonder drugs'. But remember what works for some may not help others.

This is all very helpful. Thanks for responding. I'll have to research Psyllium Seed Powder. I literally just saw it in Whole Foods and was tempted but thought I should research first. I wonder if something like that (cuz it's like fiber) is good though for someone in remission. I guess I'm just looking for supplements that will aid in or strengthen the remission, if even a little boost.

Thanks again!

Psyllium is very good for lots of conditions. I researched it extensively years ago as an investment opportunity. One that I should have jumped into.

That D vitamin your taking should be D3 in my opinion. Beneficial against COVID.

Psyllium seed powder is proven effective at maintaining remission in UC. Don't quote me, but I believe it is effective on it's own (comparable to oral mesalamine) but taking it along with mesalamine did not show benefit. Curcumin, on the other hand, seems to work best when added to oral mesalamine. It has been years since I researched these but this is what sticks in my memory.

hey guys what about CBD oil? do you recommend it for him? I just started it the other day myself, I've only seen old threads about it from 2018, i'm steadily going into a more stable state this week, not in remission yet, but I don't want to give all the credit to CBD because I also just started a different probiotic too (florastor) which has lactose so if you do not tolerate lactose be careful with florastor. but anywho, back to CBD oil - anyone actively on it? Looks like snake oil to me smile)

Re psyllium, I was advised by a doctor not to take it within 2-3 hours of mesalazine tablets as it can prevent the absorption of drugs in the colon.

CBD oil is good for anxiety and depression. I take it at night to relax me so I can sleep

D3 is very important. Most people are deficient. You also need to take K2 so the D3 gets absorbed properly.
