Hey all,

Anyone have suggestions for preventing rectal pain from running? I love to run, but it feels like after a few weeks of being consistent I end up having rectal issues and increased UC symptoms. Usually feels like hemmies or fissure symptoms (who can really tell 🤷🏻‍♀️) as well as increased BMs and abdominal cramping.

I’m tired of having to quit doing what I love ugh! Also, doctors never know what to tell me when I ask about this, they just say exercise is good for UC and brush it off...

One of my flares was triggered by a run while i was training for a half marathon. Unfortunately, I had to drop the running because it always led to stomach cramps, acid reflux and flaring is so awful. You should be able to do shorter runs (maybe alternate with walking to give your body breaks), interval training, elliptical, swimming, biking, yoga with no issues.

ya, it sucks that UC can impact our entire existence without breaking a sweat -

i agree with Jane, continue to run, just not as much - fill in with other fun stuff - you may even find a new passion -

good luck -

A dab of Balneol (OTC, but pricey) in the offending area works wonders for me.

So-same! I’m using calmoseptine cream and just trying to work through it! It’s really rough! I’m doing a 15K in May, half in October and full marathon with the CCFA in November.

This won't help with running, but I find that inline skating is possible when running is tough. Not as much impact, less jarring / sloshing around your guts. Skating also gets you outside, if you have smooth road or sidewalk surfaces available. IMHO, it's also more fun.
