Hello everyone! I am a 25 year old female and have been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis for 8 years now. I struggle with pain almost everyday and I honestly get so stressed and so much anxiety because I don’t want to rely on pain medicine but it helps me get through my day. I also get anxious when I ask for pain medicine at the hospital or my general practitioners office and they give me weird looks. They make me feel like I’m a drug addict when I’m not. It’s just very depressing when you feel like no one understands you or how extreme your pain is. So I was wondering what others do to help with the pain if you don’t rely on pain medicine. My pain usually feels like a stabbing pain. The only way to get through it is to sleep all day which makes me even more sad because I feel like my day is wasted. And it’s sucks when you have both pain and you’re flaring! Please help. Any advice is welcome.

Colitis shouldn't cause daily pain when you're in remission. Sounds like you might be flaring and need stronger UC medication. For me pain is the first symptom of a flare. Have you done a calprotectin test recently or seen GI?

I haven’t done any blood work for my GI in a year. Due to me changing specialists because I feel like none of them understand what I truly need

That's sad. I saw 5 different GIs before I found one I like (and who got me in remission). He is a specialist in IBD and I also switched to an academic hospital (i.e. they are doing clinical trials and active research) which I think helps. Calprotectin is done as a poop test. Bloodwork is not very helpful for diagnosing UC flares. I do think you should try to identify the cause of your pain as it might be inflammation which needs its own medication rather than pain meds.

What meds are you on for the colitis?

You definitely need to step up your UC meds. You shouldn’t be flaring and in constant pain from UC. Rectal meds work wonders for rectal pain. Also there is a anti spasmodic med that can be used.
