Has anyone been diagnosed with glaucoma and do you feel it was related to your UC? I was diagnosed with it on Monday and I am still in a bit of shock. I am not on steroids' but I have read there can be a connection between UC and glaucoma. I also have a form of macular degeneration. I'm trying to not freak out.

Five years ago I had multiple eye surgeries to fix a detached retina. Multiple surgeries were needed because the doctor screwed up what should have been a much more simple procedure.

I ended up with macular edema. But I was stuck between a rock and a hard place. Prednisone drops to control my macular edema caused increased IOP (eye pressure) that could lead to glaucoma. And when I finally got the edema under control, drops to manage the IOP immediately caused flareups of macular edema again.

After a lot of research I found thru Google patents that my macular edema could be cured by taking some natural supplements. The link for the patent is in the following thread that I shared with HW. (You can reduce blue light from electronic devices thru the DISPLAY in SETTINGS.)

Reading thru the patent I began to take the following supplements listed below and it completely cured my macular edema. I no longer needed the prednisone eye drops. But what may apply for you is what the patent said about macular degeneration: I cannot vouch if it will cure your macular degeneration, but it sure helped to fix my macular edema.

“Ubiquinone or co-enzyme Q10 is normally present in human retina and the level may decrease with age. It has been shown when combined with omega-3 fatty acids and acetyl-L-carnitine, ubiquinone can be useful for treating early age-related macular degeneration through improving mitochondrial dysfunction.”

1 Fish oil
2 proanthocyanidins, procyanidins (grape seed extract and other fruit like apples and berries)
3 alpha lipoic acid
4 Q10 (ubiquinone)
5 acetyl-L-carnitine
And Macuguard

Try not to freak out because those 2 conditions can now be monitored and treated more effectively than they used to be. (IBD is more commonly associated with iritis.) Just make sure to get regular check-ups with an ophthalmologist. A macular problem was detected by mine at annual office visit after I had undergone a couple CTscans with IV contrast for a torso ailment unrelated to UC. I suspect it could have ensued from iodine in the contrast solution. / Old Hat (40 yrs with left-sided UC; in remission taking Colazal)

Thank you. I will check out the study.

yup, I too have glaucoma. I have no idea if UC and my glaucoma are related, but with the faithful use of my prescribed eye drops nightly; the glaucoma has gotten no worse over the 5 years since diagnosis. I am currently in remission thanks to Entyvio and the occasional use of an anti-anxiety drug. Best of luck to you and as OldHat stated...it can be effectively treated. Best of all to you.
