I’ve had UC since 2016, I’m 58 now, ...I Started Humira, (I’m allergic to all the Mesalamine drugs), in the fall of 2016 and being on it for 8 weeks, I got into remission.

In April 2020 during a check up appointment, being that I was in remission for such a long time, I talked my GI into letting me try life without Humira.
He wasn’t thrilled, but said ok.

I got to this February 2021, then started flaring. No blood,.. but very loose. 3 to 5 times a day on average.

Went to see my GI, he put me on a course of prednisone and back on maintenance Humira.

And the end of the prednisone taper, I was on it (started it at 40 mg) for a total of 34 days. And I thought I was in very good shape, as I was having just one remission type movement each morning. Maybe a little loose some days. But feeling pretty good. I know the humira just started again and hasn’t kicked in.

I was anxious to get off prednisone, because, although it worked great, it’s main side effect (that I know of) for me is it makes me want to constantly eat. When I started the prednisone course I was 6’ 214 and when I ended it, I was still 6’ (ha) but now 224!

Ok. So...Off prednisone and finished the prednisone taper.

After 3 days...I started getting loose again. Now I’m very loose.

I’m trying to get in to see my GI again.

My question is...after being on prednisone for 34 total days, and now being off it for 7 days, can I restart it?

Ok. Heard back from GI.

I’m posting this as it might help others.

He said “absolutely do NOT go back on the prednisone. Come in to tomorrow morning. Let’s get some blood work done, then we will go from there”

I would guess if you go back on the prednisone it will mess up your blood tests.
I've certainly yo-yo'd with doses (on doctor's orders mind...) but then i also got osteoporosis so maybe it's not a good idea 🤔

Yup, it's best to stay off Prednisone. One can develop all kinds of unpleasant side effects from using it repeatedly, including cataracts & osteoporosis that damages hip & shoulder joints seriously. Depending on where your UC inflammation is, you might benefit from temporary use of steroid retention enemas or suppositories that have a lower systemic effect than Pred, or make some dietary adjustment((s) to firm up bms. Hopefully you can transition back to Humira with your GI's prompt help. Biologics are considered to be far safer longterm for IBDers than steroids. My own IBD subspecialist MD would urge you to stick with what got you to remission & maintained it. The risk in abandoning that regimen can throw one into a flare that no longer responds to it : IBD-is-fickle-Dept.!!!!! / Old Hat (40 yrs with left-sided UC)
