Hi,

I C-reactive protein in the blood related to our flares? I am currently flaring and still on Cortiment (6th week) with symptoms coming and going. I saw a naturopath a couple of times and when I got the blood results back from her, showed my C-Reactive protein at 0.50, which is very low. I understand the Cortiment has some affect on that, but shouldn't systemically that much, and with symptoms present. Has me wondering what else might be going on?
Or is this result in no way related to Ulcerative Colitis flares and symptoms?

CRP indicates major inflammation that is doing a lot of damage. The CRP value increases when tissue in the body dies due to inflammation. It doesn't mean there's absolutely no inflammation.

Some supplements can clear CRP from the blood, like curcumin and milk thistle, which skews the CRP reading a bit.

A calprotectin test is the only non-invasive direct test that can look for inflammation in the bowel. Otherwise you need a scope.

I always have low CRP even when I'm flaring, it's just not sensitive to my colitis.

Makes sense. I have a scope in 2 weeks.
Keep trying to think this will be better soon, but right not seeming to feel ok enough to start cortiment taper...

MY CRP hardly rises when I'm flaring. Even when at the stage of being in hospital, and asked to consider surgery it's not usually higher than about 10.

Faecal calprotectin on the other hand gives a pretty accurate indication of how badly I'm flaring.
