My husband has UC and is thinking about trying the Microbiome Labs Megasporebiotic. Has anyone here tried this probiotic and if so, was it helpful?
He is also considering doing the BiomeFx stool test? More info here:
biomefx.com Look under education
Has anyone here done this test and if so, did it give you any helpful info for your UC?

Thank you!

I'm taking megaspore now. It's part of my regimen. It helps a lot, more than regular probiotics ever have.

I had to start very small. 1/4 of a capsule every 3 days. The spores are really strong and they cause a lot of herxing. Also they can be irritating if your colon is still raw.

Now I take 1 capsule every 2 days. That's my sweet spot.

Glad to hear your experience with Megaspore was positive. Like you, my husband is taking quite a few nutritional supplements along with Lialda. He found fish oil particularly helpful. Microbiome Labs has a fish oil specifically for GI issues: https://rebelhealthtribe.com/product/megaomega/
Just thought I would mention it. It contains the usual EPA and DHA, but also DPA. According to them DPA supports a healthy gut by reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines and macroscopic damage. Hubby has not tried this fish oil yet, but is planning to give it a try. The switch to Megaspore is first on the list though and I thank you for your feedback. I will tell him he needs to go very slowly with his dosing.

Hello VanJordan,
My husband finally decided to try the Megasporebiotic. He started with 1/8 cap every other day, the idea being to avoid as much inflammation from die-off as possible by going slowly. So far all he notices is increased fatigue. His UC is well controlled, but he was concerned that adding the spores would stir things up. What type of die-off symptoms did you have with Megaspore if you remember?

Around 2014 I had a stool sample microbiome test done by the now defunct Ubiome. I found the results fascinating at the time, and was closely following discussions about firmicutes and bacteroidetes ratio etc

It didn't change the course of my UC but I found it interesting and was happy to be part of the research, in the hope that it would help lead to better understanding of the role of the microbiome in UC.

Increased frequency, cramping, softer stool, smellier stool, gas, and just feeling a bit crappy. But I started with too much and I think that's why. 1/8 cap every other day sounds pretty good.

If you found the results from Ubiome interesting you would definitely find the info on the BiomeFX.com website of interest. Look under the Education tab and take a look at the Interpretation Guide where you will find info on ratios of Firmicutes:Bacteriodetes among other bacterial ratios. And most definitely take a look at the Recommendations Guide. I found all the info on the site fascinating. The journal publications frequently referenced on this site as well as the microbiomelabs website offer, in my opinion, hope for adjunct treatments for those suffering from IBD, other inflammatory conditions, and IBS.

When my husband (with UC) started Megaspore he had to start with 1/8 of a capsule and even with that he had loose stools, fatigue and headache . He has worked his way up to 1/6 of a cap per day. I have IBS and had to restart with a sprinkle of a cap. Originally I started with 1/8 of a cap and ended up having diarrhea, headaches, nausea, abdominal pain, joint pain and insomnia. Over the course of 7 months I have worked up to 1/2 cap every other day of Megaspore and HU58. Trying to increase our doses has been slow going if we want to avoid most of the inflammation that comes with die-off. Here is a "Safe Use Guide" written by Michelle Moore which I found helpful:

Taking a whole capsule at a time when you're new to megaspore is a bad idea, even if you take it once every few days.

You need to open the capsule and dump out maybe 1/8 or 1/4 and take that. You build up over time.

The bottle tells you to do this.

You can't take 1 capsule to start, have a bad reaction, and then say Megaspore doesn't work. It works if you follow the instructions of the manufacturer.

It still works decently. I think the reason for UC can be different for everyone. In my case, megaspore killed off certain bacteria that were harming me and kept them away. Maybe if you don't have the same problem, megaspore won't work?
