Hi, I had a top left filling about a month or so ago and after that I started to develop sensitivity to cold but not in that area but the whole top teeth and now even the bottom.

The dentist said it doesn’t seem related to that filling as it would just be cold there.

So then I got thinking is it the meds?

I was on a lower dose of steroids called Clipper 10mg then and since then Ive been on a Prednisone taper from 30mg, still on 20mg and going to 10mg tomorrow.

Can steroids cause tooth sensitivity? Its the only thing I can think of!!

Ive algo gone through 2 bottles of special sensitivity mouthwash and toothpaste with no result.

Even room temperature water is getting me!

Does it go away once you come off of it? I really do hope so, could do without another issue..

Thanks

I have always had sensitive teeth and the last time I was on pred my teeth were so sensitive to cold. While it has improved since I came off of steroids (April of 2019) my teeth are more sensitive now than they were. My dentist said that prednisone likely damaged my teeth and I have to use a prescription fluoride toothpaste at night now because they are afraid I am going to be more prone to cavities. When I was dealing with this in pred, I searched the forum and found a bunch of old posts about this. Some folks had luck taking supplements, I took “bone up” (a calcium supplement) the entire time I was on pred and for 6 months afterwards.

Yes, the sensitivity did eventually wear off, but I feel like it normally takes a couple months once I'm completely off prednisone.

Pred is bad for the gums & ligaments that hold teeth in place below the gumline. Heard that from an excellent general dentist, husband of a colleague, who helped me recover from steroid damage in mid-1990s. Beware of commercial pastes & mouthwashes, though, that claim to relieve sensitivity. Recently I got a Sensodyne (enamel repair-type) sample from hygienist post-cleaning & tried it later at home. It burned my tongue & numbed my taste buds for a while after one brushing: phooey on false remedies! My GI system dislikes very hot or icy cold drinks or foods so I adjust my intakes accordingly, which helps teeth & gums on the route down, too. Best wishes for your condition to improve soon & do try to get off steroids permanently. / Old Hat (40 yrs with left-sided UC; in remission taking Colazal)

I do a lot of remineralization while on pred and when I'm in remission. I do at least 150% the RDA of everything related the bones and teeth. So far I haven't even had a cavity after 5 years of using pred off and on at high dose, knock on wood.
