Does anyone have experience of managing diabetes and UC re diet, also Metformin. Recently diagnosed with steroid induced diabetes following UC flare (now settled with starting vidilizumab)and have been advised to follow a low carb diet with lots of veg etc even though I’m thin. This seems to go against what an UC diet would be so as not to irritate bowel. Also doctor reluctant to put me on Metformin because says it can aggravate UC. Does anyone have experience of this. Thanks.

I'd try the low carb diet and see how it goes. Good luck

Drummer, my husband is type2, the first medicine he was put on was Metformin & it caused explosive diarrhea & could not take it. I suspect this is what your dr is talking about with your UC. This is the downside of Metformin.

What are your numbers looking like, including your A1C? I am assuming you have a meter at home to test with. Test your sugar before eating & 2 hours after eating & keep a log. I know it sounds like a drag, but it's important. Rather than trying to eat 3 meals a day, do 5 small meals, I often eat half of my lunch & eat the rest for dinner. You can eat meat, chicken, fish, many different veggies & fruits. Have snacks on hand at all times. Stay away from sugar & limit your carbs, otherwise you will end up on a medication. My daughter is type2 & she grills a lot of her meats & veggies & is very creative with spices & grilling her food.

Pred causes my sugar to go sky high, the last time I was in the hospital & was given IV pred they had to give me insulin shots 3 times a day. I got the old, why didn't you tell us you are diabetic. I have been borderline for years & know how to keep it in check.

Take care.
