Hi-- Having tried lots of things, but still trying to avoid biologics (and with severe UC inflammation), I've now been prescribed a 4 month taper of vancomycin (which I know is usually used to treat C-Diff, and no, I don't have C-Diff)... anyone else tried this? The doctor said that she's almost certain it will help my symptoms, but won't systemically address the inflammation. I'm allergic to all 5-ASAs and the Uceris (budesonide) isn't reaching everywhere that I have inflammation (been on the Uceris since it came out, daily). So this would be a lot of an intense antibiotic (i.e. 4 times/ day for the first month, 3/ day for the second month, 2 times/ day for the 3rd month and once daily for the fourth). Thanks.

I've never heard of this. Does your doc think you have a bacterial infection? I would be worried about taking antibiotics for that long. Did she say why she thinks it will help you?

Thanks. Basically, I pushed her to tell me if there was anything else she's seen as potentials to try and she mentioned it. It's not her first choice; she'd like me to start a biologic. Here's a few studies I've found: 1) (even though I don't have PSC): https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0306987720321435 and 2) (even though I'm an adult); https://academic.oup.com/crohnscolitis360/article/1/2/otz015/5532749

Who prescribed that for you? I asked my IBD specialist at University of Chicago if I could try this and he said no, there's no evidence it would help other than a very small study that wasn't done well.

Btw, I had my longest remission ever (1.5 years) after taking multiple rounds of antibiotics, including 1 or 2 rounds of vanco for reoccuring campylobacter and c diff. That's why I wanted to try it again before surgery but he said no. I didn't push the issue though. I almost always respond well to antibiotics.

I was put on IV vanc for 3 weeks for an infection, they tested my labs weekly to check the vanc level as it can cause kidney problems.

Thanks all-- @Sara14, would you be willing to communicate directly? I was looking for how to message just you but couldn't figure it out. If you know how, please drop me a line. Thanks!

Interestingly my GI who is the one of the top docs in my area says he has one patient who is on low dose vancomycin for chronic proctitis and it is very effective but he always needs to take it.

Yes. You can email me. Click on my user name and my profile with my email address should show up. Let me know if it doesn't. It doesn't look like you have your email listed publicly in your profile.

Hugo: That is interesting because I think our GIs are both at the same university. I wish I could try it.
