Question. Currently I am on budesonide and I’ve had terrible heart burn since starting it. Otherwise all my flare symptoms are gone. 😊

At first I didn’t think the heart burn was connected to the budesonide but my doctor believes it is. My doctor today told me to take nexium to see if it helps while I’m on budesonide and wait for my biologic approval. I forgot to ask her if the two can be taken at the same time or need to be taken separate. Do any of you take both of these medications?

Prednisone gives me belly burn and so does Entocort, but to a lesser extent. Even Medrol dosepacks have given me a burning sensation for a few days.

To answer your question, yes, it's fine to take nexium or another ppi while on budesonide. You can take them at the same time of day.

You could also try generic pepcid ac instead of nexium. It's cheaper and works faster, but isn't as strong. If it turns out that it works enough for you, great. If it turns out you need something stronger, then use the nexium instead.

Every time I've been on pred or entocort or a medrol dosepack, I've had to take a ppi or something like pepcid every day. It's a pretty common issue for many people on steroids.

Thank you for the reply!! I did try Pepcid a few days before my appointment and unfortunately it did. It work very well. Thanks for all the info!

I believe you can take them at the same time. You can always check with a pharmacist if you want to. I took Tums the past few times I was on prednisone. Never had any heartburn from budesonide though. I've never heard of that.

It started when I went on budesonide so that’s why my doctor believes it’s related. Could also be because I’m eating more now that I’m feeling better? Either way the heart burn is no fun haha

I always had some heartburn but nothing drastic But then over a year ago it went ballistic and the burn was so bad it really hurt. An endoscopy showed it was damaging my esophagus so I went on a daily dose of omeprazole. Although I hated adding in yet another medication I do not miss that burn in the least!!!
