"Studies have shown that curcumin can reduce the expression of the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β, IL-12, IFN-γ, TNF-α and IL-1 while increasing the expression of the anti-inflammatory cytokines IL-4 and IL-10.

Curcumin can also limit colitis mediated by the Th1 response in IL-10(-/-) mice and has a synergistic effect with IL-10, downregulating the activity of NF-κB in intestinal epithelial cells [19]. Epstein et al. [20] showed that curcumin could increase the expression of IL-10D in the colonic mucosa of children and adults with IBD.

In summary, curcumin attenuated colonic tissue damage in DSS-induced UC rats by improving the Treg/Th17 cell balance and influencing the expression of inflammatory cytokines.

Compared with the DSS model group, the curcumin group exhibited significantly reduced DAI scores and improvements in histopathological damage. The expression of CD4+IL-17+ Th17 cells was significantly lower and the expression of CD4+CD25+Foxp3+ Treg cells was significantly higher in the curcumin group than in the DSS group.

Curcumin may be a new and effective treatment for IBD by regulating the balance of Treg/Th17 cells and the expression of IL-10 and IL-17A."

I find high dose curcumin works for inflammation but it impacted my iron and hemoglobin status. I could never get my hemoglobin above 120 (12.0) which I was on high dose curcumin, but my ferritin levels would keep dropping. This was even after bleeding stopped.

I can't find any scientific evidence to prove the curcumin/iron connection, but a lot of health practitioners have noticed it in their clients too. The only established connection is that you shouldn't take curcumin WITH iron because the iron won't absorb; but there aren't studies on iron chelation and curcumin.

I would use curcumin if your flare is severe because getting inflammation under control is #1. But if your flare downgrades to light or moderate then you might want to switch to something else.
