My GI has run a new test on me this time called RBC FOL . The level is super high

4667 nmol/L (reference range : 1187-2854 nmol/L)

Any idea what this test is for and what my current levels indicate? I have a meeting with the doc a couple of days from now but concerned at this alarmingly high figure. Have never run this test before. Is it a typical UC related test for you all?

My Hgb is 11.9 (has dropped from 12.4 in June). Funnily enough my Iron store (12unmol/L) and Fe% saturation (20%) and TIBC have gone up since June. Is this typical? I had the idea with other iron parameters were climbing Hgb should too? Other than that all looks ok with my blood work (Though my MCV and MCH are a tad low too)

I am awaiting results on my Calcprotectin and should hopefully get them before my appointment with my doc.

Serum folate is a short-term measure of blood levels of folate, and since it's short-term it can vary/fluctuate day-to-day depending on what is eaten.

RBC FOL is red blood cell folate, which is a longer-term measure of levels of folate. It has less day-to-day fluctuation than serum folate.

High levels are fine and aren't know to be a problem. They often indicate you're taking vitamins with folate or you're eating lots of foods enriched with folate.

I don't think this is directly UC related. A lot of UC-ers have low folate and need supplementation or B12 intake to boost levels. Whilst I do not necessarily disagree with the previous poster I do think you should follow up on the high values. They have been linked to cancer and coronary issues although this is rare enough. But still good to discuss with your doctors.

It's just folate. Do you take vitamins? I wouldn't worry about that hemoglobin result.
