Hi everyone,

Just a quick summary, I have pan-colitis, on Imuran and Mesalazina for 2 years.
For over a year now Ive been bleeding, so for over a year Ive been applying rectal meds.

Started with the retention ones, then last 3 months its been Budesonide foam in the morning and 1g Mesalazina suppository at night.

Went from a calprotectin of 3000 to 950 to 488 and the one last week was 86.

Symptom wise I was seeing a lot less blood and had no other symptoms.

My diet is mostly healthy although I do still drink fizzy drinks and have candy every now and then and Ive been fine.

So here’s the thing. I went to the cinema last Saturday after avoiding it for nearly 2 years due to Covid.

I went a little too far by eating loads of popcorn, bag of candy and a massive coca cola.

That night I had tons of gas I was letting out and at about 5am the next day I had very bad diarrhea that lasted hours. The closest type of diarrhea I’ve had to that is the prep before a colonoscopy…so you can imagine.

Its now been 48 hours and my intestines are still making noises with implosions and I have that ill feeling. Noticed a but of mucus yesterday when I pushed.

Have I severely altered the gut flora maybe and need to start with probiotics?

I cant believe this has happened from eating a few things, It feels like I picked up a virus but Im not vomiting.

Any recommendations?

Thank you.

I wouldn't panic yet. Your system is a bit upset as you over indulged. It should settle back to normal shortly.

A flare isn't caused by one day of overindulgence. Rather, it's untreated inflammation that slowly
and silently builds over months until a critical mass is built up, then *wham* we experience flare symptoms.

You didn't mess up to cause your flare to be worse....I agree that overindulging in foods with lots of roughage and carbonated drinks can definitely cause your colon to hasten its exit. What might have happened is the action triggered might continue for a bit. Do you have antispasmodic meds?

Thank you both for the feedback, I appreciate it!

I must be very sensitive still to certain things and won't be doing anything like that again, I should have known better.

I am taking an antispasmodic every now and then but I don't have too much cramping, its mainly rumbling, implosions and still have very liquid diarrea.

Taking it easy diet wise, just bread, white rice and water mainly until I start getting solid BM's again..

Could it be due to fructose intolerance as Corn, Candy and Coca Cola have high content of fructose ? An intolerance to fructose can trigger the symptoms that you described

For me, Fructose Intolerance Test triggered a bad diarrhea, I was extremely worried for a day / two and then it went back to symptoms before the test probably once the fructose was out of the system

I think you might be thinking of high fructose corn syrup? Corn itself barely contains any fructose, but is notoriously difficult for ibd-ers to digest, because of the high (insoluble) fibre content.
