A necrotic rectum? OMG!!!!! I can imagine that you've been through hell, Old Mike. RE right arm problem post-surgery: did they break a vein? (That happened to me a while back in a "top"-rated hospital, which (nevertheless) had some lousy phlebotomists.) But like you, I felt grateful for the excellent young surgeon plus caring RNs. What a triple whammy with your wife's fractures, besides! It sounds like you're recovering your usual feisty, analytical spirit these recent days-- so keep it up. You're right to keep moving, but stay hydrated and rest a lot, too. That old maxim "They can't keep a good man down" definitely applies in your case! / Old Hat (40+ yrs with left-sided UC; in remission taking Colazal)

Old Hat: The problem is Ulnar nerve damage.thus the claw hand when I woke up.
On another subject, one of the weirdest feeling is when they pull the jackson pratt tubes, hard
to describe, I had a pelvic, a pelvic gutter and one other. Plus the IR drain of the giant pus ball
somewhere behind a kidney. I had bags and bags of all kinds of antibiotics for 20 days, seemed like every 8 hours would get a new one> Cultures showed e coli and staff. The IR drain pulled 75ml or greater of pus/day
for a few weeks. Its all dead now I think.

Old Mike I hope you don't mind me asking this, did you have a bowel obstruction due to fecal impaction or do they not know what caused it? Also did your colon actually rupture? I'm so happy to hear you're on the mend. I googled "bowel necrosis" after reading your posts in November and saw the mortality rate is pretty high and then when it went quiet was afraid for the worst. Thank you for all the updates.

poopydoop: I remember it well, had a stool could not get out,was hard had a lot of rectal pain, finally
i shot a little vegie oil up there and got it out. But by that time it had ripped a hole in my rectum. Was a hard dry stool I probably had not drank enough water. After that I spiked 103.5 temp for a day or two, felt sicker and sicker
was getting weaker, had a lot of back and kidney pain. Then heart rate started to get wacky. Then went to
the ER. Then had cat scan, blood work ect, they said your not going anywhere. Surgical team had a few meetings, and emergency surgery at 1 AM. Got to a room about 8 I guess and talks with my nurse for
a few hours, got a little sleep. Then wheeled to the surgery, remember electronically signing consent, and
them putting a gas mask on me. Next thing I woke up with no pain, the muscle/gut spams started the next night. Finally saw my surgeon for the first time in the AM. young women. I thought to myself, she cut me up. I was expecting an old guy, go figure. I still have full anal sphincter control, not good for anything
but I have it. Yes had stool bacteria or even perhaps stool inside my body cavity, that area is sterile, so
bacteria getting past the peritoneum, not good. I have almost a full length colon, and a rectal stump.
Lets see what else. Had 3 home care nurses, pt to make sure I was up and around and walking good, a PT hand nurse for the nerve damage in the hand, special exercises for Ulnar nerve, then of course the ostomy nurse.

I can't believe you made it!!
So happy you survived.
I told my wife a few weeks ago about a great guy on the forum named old mike
who sadly passed away.

Long live old mike!!

Do you think it was the Mag/zinc/calcium that did it?
I've been taking it for a while now and it seems ok.

Or just flaring since 1986 had it's toll. smile

The mag/zinc/calcium might have made too hard a stool if I did not drink enough water.
Who knows. I have taken tons of calcium in the past,no effect. This combo stopped the D,before
this happened,and I think I was only taking 1/3 of a dose.

Butt temp 171 F in the stall now. Too bad I am doing it in the oven, would have much rather
fired up the smoker. Will have to depend on liquid smoke.

Old Mike,

How'd your pork butt turn out? Are you on any special diets now?

I hope your health continues to improve and that you keep us updated.

I'm just so happy to see you on here. It feels like you are one of those miracle stories that you hear about. It fills you with hope.

Just read the ostomy form for the first time scary place. Now that I have a colostomy not happy to see the problems such as rectal stump nightmares rectal stump blowouts diversion colitis. I don't even want to think about cutting out the whole anus to solve problems. Anyway the the pork butt came out real good I'm not on any special diet. For some reason have a massive sugar craving eat a lot of cookies peanut butter cups cereal donuts peanut butter and jelly sandwiches ice cream. Believe body trying to gain back that 20 pounds real fast. Yes I eat regular food too don't worry, appetite is more now than it used to be. Old Mike

Mike, am I understanding correctly that you still have most of your colon? If so, how does the colostomy affect your UC? Won't you still be at risk from continuous flaring?

CC: Believe have 90-95 plus % of colon. I would suspect diversion colitis in rectal stump, and or UC
in colon. So far no detectable UC, unless the soft /sometimes liquid stool going into bag is UC.
But take some colace every day and try to drink enough water. Early on was outputting hard larger stools
stoma nurse went nuts. Made me take colace and lots of water. Stoma looks nice and pink, and not diseased.

Old Mike,

I've had 2 obstruction surgeries. 1st one in 2016 I ended up with a colostomy, 2nd one was due to adhesions/hernia... They unkinked it, removed another 3 inches and moved my stoma more towards the upper middle. Since the colostomy... I am in Remicade and usually methotrexate. My scopes from my colostomy all the way up are good. It's the Hartman's pouch, rectum and anus that give me issues. I also have a fistula from my rectum/anus area to the vagina. They went in April 2021 and removed the Hartman's pouch and just scrapped the anus. The fistula they left alone. There isn't much "colon" left in there.... The anus still has mucus output but it is better. My stool Is thick and I have to drink alot of water, watered down apple or grape juice. (That helps thin it down.). My surgeon has kept me on a low residue diet since my 1st surgery

I haven't checked the ostomy site yet.... But if you have any questions let me know.

Thanks Clo.
Here's a funny story while in the hospital. The stoma nurse comes in to change my bag we were good friends by this time. So she asks me if she could bring two students in to watch I say of course I'm into education on IBD. In walks to student nurses a male and a female. She takes my old bag off and starts to clean up the stoma skin by this time the female student starts to turn a little green holds her mouth and runs out of the room. I think to myself wow this is a good way to figure out if you really want to be a nurse or not. Old Mike

Old Mike,

I am still chuckling.

The first time I changed my bag alone it took me 45 minutes. I thought I was going to faint or upchuck the whole time. That's when I realized how strong people working with ostomies really are. It's not for the faint hearted. Lol.

So glad you are feeling better.

7 months with a bag. At first it was the end of the world. After few weeks no big deal. Just like anything in life. We panic/nervous at first then just another part of our day. Like many have posted it fills up depending on how much u eat. Working 8-10-12 hour days like me makes u eat less so really never a big deal. Good luck Mike
