Since 2017 I have been taking 4 Mesalamine DR (GENERIC Lialda) from the manufacturer Zydus.
I have had no side effects, except every 1 out of 10 bottles, where after a few pills I notice I get parched mouth, thirst, slight headache, and loss of appetite.
When I encounter a “bad” bottle, I have just gotten a new bottle from the pharmacy, making sure it is a different Lot # and expiration date.
My theory is that there are bad lots/batches that are minutely different qualities/ or micro-ingredients or proportions causing side effects. And so I always keep an extra bottle, tested and verified by myself, which is the good bottle as backup. As soon as I switch to a good bottle, after a few capsules the parched mouth and headache go away, so I can tell the difference quickly.
Now I am having a huge issue since moving to NYC last month. Consecutive lot numbers (expiration 05/23 and 06/23) are causing me side effects! I wonder is it a formula change. Or my biochemistry, which is doubtful. Or because I am now getting supply from NY instead of PA, even more doubtful.
Has anyone else reported similar side effects? Or noticed a difference between bottles and lots?
Or between different manufacturers?
I am wondering if I need to now switch to a different mesalamine.
*Note these were the same side effects I would get with the NON GENERIC Lialda which I took back in 2008 and was forced to stop because of these very side effects. I was able to take the generic in 2017 bc it didn’t have these side effects.
