Hey there,

So I've recently begun flaring after three years of remission and I've already forgotten the basics of what to eat while flaring. The internet is pretty crazy with info so I thought I'd ask. I know a lot of the DON'Ts (e.g. dairy, fried, greasy, fiber, spicy, seeds, caffeine, fatty, sugary, nuts, etc.) but in terms of actual meals each day, I'm feeling kind of lost.

I've been doing lots of plain: plain rice, plain chicken, gluten free crackers and pasta, hummus, eggs, brothy soups, smoothies, but I feel like I'm very limited.

What do you like to eat while flaring? And any new tips and tricks to speed up healing while flaring (besides taking prednisone which I'm already doing)?

Thanks.

I eat bananas, toast, chicken broth, cooked carrots, apple sauce. That's about it. Food is very individual for people with this disease. What works for one person, might not work for another.

Ok... I do all the things I am supposed to when I am in a flare. SCD bone broth chicken soup is my go to. Oatmeal. Scrambled eggs. Broth from beef, fish or seafood. Potatoe soup broth. When things are desperate...I can't eat and the thought of food gags me...Cheetos and Lays along with Ginger ale and Italian ices.. I don't know why I just know that it works for me.

Good luck. I hope you feel better soon.

i just eat less than normal of my usual foods, but eliminating the foods that i ate that got me into the flare in the first place -

simple is key for me - lots of fluids, fruits, veggies, good stuff -

just curious > how many times have you used prednisone ?

I generally eat everything but less of it and veggies get cooked a little longer.

Thanks everyone. I'm just kind of eating cautiously and smartly for now. I appreciate the tips.

For TT, I really started on prednisone in 2016 when I started flaring after a ten-year remission. I've probably had courses of it 8 times since then. The first time I took it, my flare was gone in like a week. Then I feel like it works less and less each time. I don't know.

When I'm flaring I eat (well drink) a lot of smoothies, with dairy alternative milk (rice milk and oat milk usually).

Banana, peanut or almond butter (or ground almonds) and fine oats (Ready Brek in the UK) is a favourite smoothie option.

I try to eat soft foods that are nutrient dense, and soluble fibre. My 'safe' foods include:

Potato, white rice, oats, avocado, sweet potato, hummus, butter, cheese, cream cheese, steamed or baked apple, live yogurt, rice crispies, fish eg tuna, haddock, salmon, eggs.

None of this makes a gourmet meal but when I'm that flared up my appetite is low anyway, so it's more a case of trying to get the calories and nutrition in.
