Hi all, here in my middle age I seem to have developed high blood pressure. I have a call in to my doc to try to get a prescription for it.
I read that ACE inhibitors can cause digestive bleeding. Definitely staying away from those! Are there any other blood pressure meds that folks know can cause problems for UC sufferers? Or any that you have tried that have worked well and haven't caused issues?
Thanks in advance. It's always so stressful having to start any new medication.
I should say, I'm in remission now for many years (knock on wood) and take Asacol.

have you tried any non-med approaches to addressing your high blood pressure ?

I've cut way back on my salt intake as well as red meat, and was prescribed Amlodipine Besylate 5mg. tabs about a year ago. No problems and it seems to work just fine. Good luck to you.

I’m starting doing breathing exercises twice a day. In my case I think I became much more sensitive to sodium after menopause. I gradually realized I was having a reaction to the Gaviscon Advance I take for my reflux, which contains sodium. It’s a big bummer because that medication worked great for me and helped me get off a PPI. I will start watching salt intake generally. I hope if I can get it under control I might be able to take just one spoonful of the GA before bed.

I have also found in menopause that strength training makes a big difference. The problem is I need to remember to keep making the workouts harder when I plateau out. I’ve been at a plateau for awhile and I think that also contributed to the blood pressure issues. I also walk 30 min. a day.

have you tried any food changes to try and help with both the HBP and the acid reflux ?

Yes, did a lot of food experimentation when the reflux started and found it was not related much to what I ate, but more to other things rarely talked about: only drinking tepid water, not sitting on soft furniture, what pants I wore, etc. I don’t have actual GERD (visible on scope) but a weak LES. I did give up caffeine. I tried introducing matcha again this fall after a few years off caffeine but that also, I think, contributed to the BP issues so I’ve stopped again.

I've had hypertension for about 40 years (long before UC). It runs in my family so I assume it's genetic. Most of that time I used a combi pill called capozide that is a combination of captopril (an ace inhibitor) & hydrochlorothiozide (diuretic). In early 2020 right before the pandemic hit my BP went out of control and I went through months of trying different things to get it back to normal. I now take standalone hydrochlorothiazide (diuretic), Amlodipine (calcium channel blocker) & Carvedilol (beta blocker). Not crazy about all these meds, but happy I am back to normal and staying there (last infusion I was 117/77).

If you have to use meds to get to normal there are lots of options, but it might be trial and error until you get to the right treatment for you. Some meds have undesirable side effects so if you feel bad on one med, don't be afraid to talk to your doc about trying a different one.

I didn't notice any UC issues with any of the meds I had tried

I'm using Telmisartan 80mg and now with Diltiazemn 120mg. No issues, thankfully.
