Ok so first things first I’m a man, so this is already a bit weird…

Went to see the colo-rectal surgeon today so they could take a look at the rectum/anus due to the constant bleeding in the off chance that there’s was something else happening but turns out that its simply the colitis…

Waiting for biologic still but he suggested antibiotics. I said last time I was in flagyl and cipro It gave me diarreah for a month.

So he suggested I try flagly suppositories that are meant for vaginal use. Anybody heard of this before?

Was thinking of doing the Salofalk retention enemas at night and this abx supp in the morning after a bm but just concerned I would have to go for a bm later in the day and it wouldn’t be as effective…doesn’t always happen.

Either that or do it at night and a 1g salofalk supp in the morning.

What do you reckon?

Hmmm. Never heard of it! I should ask. They always want to give me flagyl for diverticulitis but I refuse because it gives me horrible nausea and diarrhea when I take it orally. Doesn’t affect me if I take it in an iv though. I hate that drug! I’ve had other drs tell me that augmentin is just as effective antibiotic as flagyl. Have also taken levaquin or levoflaxin instead.

yeah worth a try I guess. Im thinking maybe I should do it evenings instead of the retention enemas to make sure its in there a good 8 hours since its only a 7-day course. Pop a Salofalk supp in after a BM the following day.

I could go back to retention afterwards. That make sense you think?

I don't see there would be an issue...many meds are originally used for one thing but do great for another. Seems a good option. Good news nothing else going on as in hemmies or fissues.

I like your plan...keep us updated.

Flagyl was originally introduced to the U.S. market as an amebicide-- intended to combat protozoan infections only. That's supposed to be the reason this drug then got manufactured in vaginal suppository form-- to treat protozoan infections transmitted sexually in female patients. Why doctors started RXing it to treat other types of infection beats me! You will probably be safer, though, using the Flagyl suppository than the oral Flagyl, which is a vile drug. In fact, when it first came to market in the U.S., the then-active Ralph Nader health research group publically posted that it should ONLY be used to treat amoebic infections. I find it outrageous that physicians ever started routinely prescribing Flagyl in combo with Cipro, also a very strong antibiotic oral med. Then they wonder why so many patients end up with C-diff, besides. Either of those drugs can wipe out beneficial bacteria in the gut, which leads to the horrible C-diff growth. You are right to question any meds you are prescribed, especially for on-going rectal bleeding. / Old Hat (40+ yrs with left-sided UC; in remission taking Colazal)

OH...hopefully, being topical in the rectum, it won't cause said side effects since it doesn't go through the gastro tract.

Yes, Quincy, I made that point, but also commented on overuse of oral Flagyl RXing because 1wish mentioned getting terrible diarrhea in the recent past from the 2-orals combo. If one has a systemic protozoan infection, such as intestinal amebiasis, then one needs oral Flagyl. Untreated protozoans can migrate to the liver and brain from gut. But, as FlowersGal also commented lately, oral Flagyl need not be commonly RXed for bacterial infections plus it has unpleasant side effects for many people. / Old Hat (40+ yrs with left-sided UC; in remission taking Colazal)

Turns out in Spain pharmacies don’t sell metronizadol suppositories, only vaginal tablets.

I wrote to my regular GI and she said not to take the antibiotics since she has already reviewed for infections and the diagnosis is still that its the colitis.

She said to hold on until the biologic if I can

Hope your biologic will be on the schedule sooner than later. It's good you discussed it with your regular GI.

Interesting, OH about flagyl original use!

My GI just tried to give it to me again and when I said no he replied that “it’s the best one.” 🤨 which was irritating because I’m sure he’s the one who previously told me that augmentin was just as good to use.

Drs have told me in the past that flagyl is the best at preventing cdiff infection. Don’t know if it’s true or not. Regardless I won’t take it. It also makes me half crazy — very emotional — probably because I can’t eat and my enzymes get all thrown out if whack. Not to mention the horrible taste in the mouth — and I’ve tried all the methods of swallowing the tabs to keep the taste off the tongue so it’s not that. I know many others have taken it with no affect so for some reason it affects me in a very negative way.

You're not alone with those bad side effects from oral Flagyl, FlowersGal. It does cause a metallic taste to everything. I was also told by an ER nurse that it causes "ups and downs" to many patients so doctors really should warn them about that when prescribing it. BTW, very annoying that your MD just reversed himself in latest comments on it! (Plus the baloney that it's the best thing against C-diff: outrageous!) The "best thing against C-diff" = probiotics, taken daily 2 hours after last antibiotic dose, per longtime forum member Judy2 (AKA Jujub), a pediatric RN. (She hasn't posted in recent years, but gave us lots of good advice on mitigating Rx drug side effects while she was active here in the past.) / Old Hat (40+ yrs with left-sided UC; in remission taking Colazal)

Flagyl does not cause c diff. It's one of only 3 antibiotics that can TREAT c diff.

I can not take IV flagyl. Made it so that I could not breath... But for some strange reason I can take Flagyl in a pill form for 7 days. Makes me super sick and paranoid.... but I can take it.... Yikes...

Add Prednisone to it and I am a real joy to be around ... Lol... 😳
