Got admitted Thurs night, just got out today. They did a CT scan with die and contrast. Determined pretty bad Pancolitis. Started IV steroids, antibiotic, and pepcid for upset stomach.
Bleeding stopped, green diarrhea, gas and pain still. Sent me home with 40 mg Pred, Cipro, Flagyl, hydrocortisone sups.
They want me to continue antibiotics for 10 days.
Any coaching and guidance or feedback from you guys at this point? And why 2 antibiotics??
I’m home now so I’m happy and my energy is ok.
And no bleeding. Just lots of pain when pooping, which is still liquid form. Lost 6 lbs in 2 days at hospital. No other complications.

Have you discussed biologicals with your doctors? They work pretty well for IBD symptoms. When I first got UC they were just coming to market for UC and I had to go with 6-mp instead. I probably would have saved myself at least one hospitalization if I was on Remicade instead of 6-mp. There are lots of great meds now for IBDs.

2 antibiotics work together yet seperately to kill of different strains of bacteria located in you GI tract. I would start eating some yogurt. It helps with yeast infections that develop due to antibiotics. If you are male you may think you won't get them .. men get them--, just in different places. Think raw itchy peeling skin all the way up your butt crack... I would get Calmoseptine at Walmart or CVS. It's an over the counter cream that protects your anus and surrounding skin from the acid like output you are probably having. You will have to ask for it because they hide it behind the counter. It helps raw butt tremendously. I would also try some fiber to try to solidify your output somewhat and change your diet to things with a slower transit time that are easier in your tummy. You could also call and ask you doc for something prescription to slow it down.

Also...talk to your docs about their future gameplan. They may need to have you on stronger medication.

Good luck. I hope you feel better soon.

Thank you for the fast responses. I tried Entyvio last year but after 8 or 10 weeks no results i stopped it. I eventually went into remission a month or 2 after. Maybe entyvio helped?! Idk but i stopped it.
I was in remission for 1 full year just taking Apriso pills. Then this happened and i ended up in the hospital.

Sorry to hear about what happened. Were you checked for c-diff? I asked because, I ended up in the hospital with it & had green diarrhea. I was put on a probiotic called Floraster by the dr, it's available OTC. You have to time taking it with the antibiotics, the will kill th bad & good bacteria needed to balance the gut.

You need to discuss trying Entyvio again, however, it is a slow going medication, you didn't give it enough time.

Hi Susie, yes they tested for cdif, negative they said. But i feel there are so many possible bad bugs out there that could cause a flare that they do not check or are not able to check /test for every possible one. So they load us up with antibiotics to cover any possibility. And yes it’s concerning because it wipes out good and bad.
Also yes I had been on Florastor and am taking it more regularly now 2 times a day 30 mins before meal. I should be starting VSL#3 tomorrow.

I was going to ask about c diff as well. If symptoms continue, I'd maybe see about getting retested for it. I don't know why they'd give you any antibiotics, let alone two strong ones, if you tested negative for all infectious causes. Flagyl can cause a nasty metallic taste, so I put it on a spoonful of yogurt or applesauce and then swallow, not letting the pill touch my tongue.

Glad you're home now. Hope you get better soon.

Just a refresher on what Pred does to our body, our muscles everywhere including our intestines “ The study showed prednisone directs the production of annexins, proteins that stimulate muscle healing. Giving weekly doses of prednisone also stimulated a molecule called KLF15, which is associated with improved muscle performance. Daily doses of prednisone, however, reduced KLF15, leading to muscle wasting.”
