apparently for asking a simplistic question ....but how does trapped gas in the intestines actually cause pain....in particular left sided pain...or shoulder pain

When the intestines are inflamed, putting pressure on the surface causes pain. Much like it hurts to put pressure on a cut or bruise on your skin.

When the intestines are empty, they're like a sock in your laundry or dresser. They deform and opposite walls lightly touch.

When inflamed intestines are full of gas, they stretch out and pressure is placed on the sore walls. Same when the intestines are full of stool. It hurts and causes muscle spasms. Generally it's a mild ache and not super painful with gas. Stool can cause greater pains

Be vigilant. , that might be a sign that your flare is escalating. Do not ignore gas pains. Typically when I start getting gas pain is the start of a bad flare and you must attack quickly
