I've been on Prednisone now for over three months and just starting to taper. But around the third month is when my cheeks start puffing up and I look bloated and swollen in my face. It's a trade-off because that often means my flare is getting better (which I'll take any day of the week). And I know that eventually my cheeks will go down once the Prednisone is out of my system but as for now, is there anything we can do to lower the swelling? It may not seem like a big deal (especially in comparison to a flare, which it's not) but it's making me a bit depressed. I don't want to leave the house and see people because I know they will look at me and think, whoa what's going on? I just look different.

I've tried face rollers and drinking tons of water. I found maybe a haircut can re-shape how I appear. Again, I know this isn't a huge deal but it kind of messes with my psych a little bit and like I said, makes me kind of depressed.

Any MoonFace tips out there? Thanks!

DavidEA,

I don't have any tips or suggestions on how to not develop a "moon face" while in Prednisone. I have tried not eating, drinking less water, drinking more water. Nothing helped me.

Hopefully someone else will have had luck doing something I haven't thought of.

It cannot be avoided. You can limit moonface, bloating and water retention by limiting your salt intake.

It can be helped by taking DHEA and pregnenolone when you are on doses higher than 10mg.

DHEA 15mg daily, pregnenolone 50mg daily.

These replace the DHEA and pregnenolone that your adrenals aren't making because prednisone shut them down. It doesn't 100% stop side effects but it reduces them greatly. I'd probably have no bone density left if I didn't do this, and in fact on my last high dose prednisone stint I actually gained bone mass.

Moon face is temporary and will go away. Osteoporosis however is permanent. Please take calcium

Don't take pregnenolone without consulting with a doctor first, ESPECIALLY if you're a woman. It's a hormonal supplement and can interact with other medications that affect your hormonal balance.

It's really not safe to tell people to take unapproved medications with numerous side effects and interactions.
