I am scheduled for my next surgery in a few weeks. I had first surgery in December and my colon was removed and got an end ileostomy. Since it has been a good amount of time being off of steroids and immunosuppressants, my surgeon is planning on creating the pouch, removing rectum and reattaching in one surgery. I know that it is common to do this in two more surgeries, but the surgeon says that the benefits of not having a third surgery, and the issues that come with creating another ostomy make the single surgery a better option.
Has anyone out there had it done this way?

You could ask that question also on J-pouch dot org.

Back when I got my j-pouch the common 2-step surgery was colectomy with the rectum removed and pouch created. The second step was the take-down/reconnection (small surgery).

Yeah, I believe what Keith explained is the typical process for a 2-step. Do you have a good surgeon you trust? You can always do a consult with another surgeon if you want a second opinion.

I have heard of the UK and other european countries do the surgeries in the order of what the OP is having done. It's not a standard order in the US. They probably both have their pros and cons. It seems like 1-step surgeries aren't typically done for IBD patients anymore but some cancer and other colon issues are done with 1-step surgeries.
