Hi all,

After going a and e and being referred to the surgical assessment unit, i was advised today that I am healing fine from the hemmoroid surgery I had 3 weeks ago and that all the pain and bleeding is due to the procitis (complete opposite to what my consultant said on the phone)
The doctor has requested with my consultant that my colonoscopy is booked in asap and my appointment to see him is brought forward

In the meantime he has prescribed me Metronidazole to try and help with the inflammation, I am to go back next week to discuss how it is working

Has anyone had any experience on these meds before and how effective did you find them?

That's an antibiotic to treat infections. It's a nasty, strong one, too. It can give you a metallic taste in your mouth and make even water taste disgusting. If this happens to you, I recommend putting the pill on a spoonful of applesauce or yogurt so it doesn't touch your tongue. That's what I did with success.

Probiotics can help mitigate the side effects of antibiotics. I try to avoid antibiotics when possible but when they are unavoidable I take plenty of probiotics along with Saccharomyces Boulardii.

S. Boulardii has a proven track record of preventing diarrhea but most importantly it is not a bacteria like most probiotics, but it is a probiotic YEAST. That means it is completely immune from being destroyed by antibiotics. So it can remain in your gut to help prevent invasion from malevolent bacteria.

Metronidazole (Flagyl = brandname in USA) is an amebicide, anti-protozoan. It's unlikely to quell ulcerative proctitis. You are right to schedule a C-scope for accurate diagnosis. / Old Hat (40+ yrs with left-sided UC; in remission taking Colazal)
