March 2022 - Maltodextrin Consumption Impairs the Intestinal Mucus Barrier and Accelerates Colitis Through Direct Actions on the Epithelium

https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fimmu.2022.841188/full

These popup every once in a while on what are food additives and the spread of the western diet do to us? One of those pervasive off and on theories over the years (one of many). It's interesting.

And they actually have a 6 part research series on the Interplay Between Diets, Microbiota, Bacterial Metabolites and Host for Intestinal Health and Disease.

Yes! Maltodextrin is in all sorts of delicious salty snacks I wouldn't have expected it to be in, like crackers and also sauces.

And I've been trying to avoid carrageenan, but it's even in what I'd otherwise expect to be "whole" foods, like cartons of heavy whipping cream or organic sour cream. You have to be really vigilant to find which dairy items contain it in particular.

I live in rural Vermont and been getting raw milk from a farmer we know a short distance down the road. It's still got the cream in it, which we separate into heavy cream, and/or make butter from it. Got laying hens and a veggie garden. Still gotta go get groceries though!

But, yeah, tough avoiding that junk as it's in everything.

Thanks for posting this.

I think food does play a part. When I got sick we moved out to the country. My husband plants a garden using old original seeds that have not been modified. The difference in the taste is amazing. We get our eggs from our neighbor-free roaming chickens that venture into our yard -, our all natural grass fed beef and dairy across the street, our honey is a half a Mile away and our neighbor has a huge pond that he lets us fish in. We still have to go to the store for some things but we try to be self sufficient. We all trade with and help one another. 2 of us - different families- have IBD. We started helping and trading and it grew from there. We have a lady with goats, a man with sheep and another family with buffaloe, ostrich and llamas that are very interested in what we are doing and are talking about joining.....but they are having trouble with the organic/no pesticides....and using the old non modified seeds for growing things.

BTW... The other person and I have a mini flare when we eat alot of the store bought fruit, veges, dairy or meats. My health isn't great but it's worse when I don't watch what I eat.

This shows the value of keeping a food diary and monitoring your diet. No need to wait for the research to be published. Check out my signature. I learned years ago the maltodextrin & Carboxymethylcellulose, etc. were huge no-no's for me by just watching how I reacted to certain foods. It is a long process but worth it.

I found this article a few months ago:

https://sciencenorway.no/food-food-safety/patients-demand-testing-of-three-food-additives/1736287

So it kind of confirm that at least someone is looking into it.

Avoiding all food additives and reverting to a whole food diet has done wonders for me over the years. Glad to see further research confirming it. Carboxymethyl cellulose and carrageenan are some others. They're in EVERYTHING.
