Chickens have a rigid hierarchal social structure, a.k.a. the pecking order. Everybirb knows his/her ranking, and there's universal respect for those rankings within the group. They avoid higher ranking chickens entirely, step out of their way, and keep their distance. They don't pick fights with higher ranks, as they've already fought and lost against them. If this rooster looks at you as his superior in rank then he won't be a problem for you, and will keep his distance from you and even run away when seeing you approach which will make living near him tolerable.

Today, you're lower ranked than the rooster in his bird brain which is why you're harassed by him. As you're challenged and you run away, turn your back, or look away from the rooster, and those are submissive acts.

We did put wire around the bottom of the porch long ago. Those roosters were over here complaining every single night for hours wanting to get into that area. They would fly/hop up and down trying to look in the windows of the house, and then go to that part of the house to cackle and crow. They were determined to be allowed in that area. Those birds...They are really pretty smart.

Guys you are not going to believe this...

So I was running around making sure I didn't kill the roosters.....

I leaned over to check out their water bowel... Gotta keep it fresh and cold for the little darlings.... And suddenly I was hit with the worse abdominal pain ever. One minute I was looking into their beady little eyes cussing their lineage and the next I was opening my eyes to the ants crawling on the grass. I was heaving like a teenage kid that had been on a three day drunk and was praying at the outdoor alter.... I was promising I'd be nice to everything and everyone if only the pain, nausea and dizziness would just stop. I couldn't roll over or move without getting violently ill. The darn roosters were going absolutely crazy in the space under the porch-- cackling and sorta screeching and crowing....sorta beating their wings against the wire. I rember thinking...OMG he's gonna beat my a55 or peck my eyes out. There was so much noise my neighbor came back over to check on them. (Thank God!)

I spent the rest of the night in the ER... I have a 7 to 9 mm free roaming kidney stone. I dislodged it when I fell in the netting. The pain was worse than childbirth in some ways.

I am home now trying to make my next appointments. Gotta get that thing removed....

The roosters wire was peeled back today so they could leave... But they are still in there munching away. I shudder thinking how many spiders must be underneath there to keep them so happy.

Just this once I am glad they were over here. Without their noise my neighbor would not have popped over and I would not have made it to the ER. I have to admit I was wishing I'd had time to show them who the boss was.... Lol...

So this time they were inadvertently my heroes.... Because they made so much noise. But if they'd gotten out of there and been able to get to me.... I think they would have dominated me... Lol..

Wow...this needs to be a show kn TLC! A relief you made it to the ER...I would have assumed they would have made arrangements for you to have surgery.
Hope you're able to have it soon. I've only heard from others as to the horrific pain they can cause...hope you don't have to wait long. However...with your track record with anesthesia...how will that work 😵‍💫

Wow is right, and I agree this should be a show on TLC. Incredible the twists and turns to this saga. So scary! Okay so the roosters are not all bad, they are eating those wretched spiders (I could have used a spider-eater today to dispatch the GIANT spider in my basement) plus sounded the alarm to get you medical help.

Still I think once you recover, you should try the iPoop suggestions for establishing dominance over those guys.

Owwwww! So sorry clo! Hope they get you fixed up soon. Please keep us updated!

Sometimes you just gotta thank god for spider-eating roosters! — wouldn’t that make a great title for a country western song? 😀

But seriously clo hope you’re mended up soon. I wonder if a kidney stone could have contributed to all those uti’s you’ve been having?

wow, Clo! Never a dull moment in your life, but this one you could have skipped. I have heard that kidney stones are excruciatingly painful. Hope they can get it removed as soon as possible. Don't they zap it with ultrasound so it breaks up and you can pass it? So glad your neighbor was able to get you to the hospital! Scary!

I have a spider story of my own smile Last week I had someone here to clean my dryer vents which exits right below the window behind my desk in my office. I opened the window to talk to him and he jumped back when he opened the vent .. a big ole wolf spider came out of it (I live in the woods). He said it was crawling up the siding towards the window. I said that was ok and that spiders and I have an understanding -- as long as I don't see them they get to live, but if I see them they die. Right after I said that his eyes got really big and he looked at me and said the spider stopped as soon as I said that. I think he thought I was a witch because spiders can understand me lol

Clo - I hope you can get the kidney stone removed before you have another episode like that again. Sounds deeply, deeply unpleasant. That said, I still think I would choose kidney pain over dealing with huge wolf spiders, haha (I made the mistake of googling 'huge wolf spiders'). You would absolutely laugh at my battles with the puny spiders of the UK. It's spider season over here and so our house spiders have been on the march. One large mf ran behind my toilet. Well I couldn't bring myself to kill it, so I got a footstool and put my feet up on it every time I went to the toilet >_>. It's gone now, only to be replaced by a cellar spider - believe it or not, those incredibly thin and spindly spiders apparently eat other house spiders, so maybe the first spiderbro was its lunch.

I am so frustrated with the medical field here in the US. The ER doc clearly stated I needed to be seen today or tomorrow. The first appointment I could get was on Thursday. The person she referred me to couldn't fit me in until Mid September.

The ER doc called in antibiotics plus some other med that makes you pee... But no pain meds. No freaking pain meds. I have tramadol in the cabinet but it does not work for me. I'm making a call to them in the morning. Jeez....

To add insult to injury I currently have a UTI. They make me so confused. I don't know which end is up. I made appointments but can't remember when or with who....

Pray they can zap it everyone. Although can that mess us your stoma?.

NCOT--Its just wonderful to see you on here.

CcinPa-thats what's mostly under my porch now. Those spiders are huge! You should come to my house and train my spiders to stay away.

Ipoop-did you have to get anything done or were you able to pass it on your own?

Flowersgal-I think we are going to find out that it did contribute to those UTI s.

Serenity-Ive been looking online for heavy duty gloves. Although as quick and mean as this bird is I am scared.

Quincy-I am very apprehensive about anesthesia. I too thought they'd fix it and then release me but that's not what happened.

@Clo - Thank you!

Is going to the ER an option? That's what we usually do here: just turn up to A&E (Accident & Emergency - basically our ER) and wait our turn to be seen. It can mean waiting hours but you will at least get to see a doctor at the end of it. I just find it absolutely baffling you weren't prescribed any pain meds.

The UTIs worry me as well, as they can be serious in older people. I hope the antibiotics you were given were for the UTI. If not, I'd chase that up as well. Good luck!

I was able to pass it on my own. They gave me lots of fluids and it passed naturally. It was a long time ago, so I cannot remember all of the details. I believe there was a catheter involved which sucked.

I went back to the ER. Saw yet another doctor. They acted like I was a dope fiend! They kept insisting I just make do with the Tramadol. Surgery was not happening. They said I needed to go to my urologist/group appointment tomorrow. Until then I can take ... Drum roll please..... Tylenol.

Tylenol.

I'm so mad. I risked COVID 19 and monkey pox to be told to take Tylenol. They gave me IV zofran and an IV pain killer shot (which lasted for 4 hours) and told me to start on Tylenol right after I left so I could get a handle on it before it got too bad. But not to worry... They were sure my group of doctors would have a game plan tomorrow. Darn... I just want it out today.

AND now I can feel the hernia I've developed around my stoma from the distention of my abdomen. Im scared to tell my colorectal surgeon cause he said he was going to take the rest of my colon out and give me an ileostomy. I'm going to have to revert to blended soup style eating until I lose enough weight for my tummy to shrink alittle. Maybe things will sorta pop back in place? I don't even know if they can fix stoma hernias without opening you up or moving the whole stoma.

Oh no. I am so sorry to read all this! What an ordeal you are going through. And nothing humorous about it. I have no advice to give, having not been through anything similar, but just wanted to send a virtual hug!

Thinking of you. Hope the doc appt goes well and there is a plan to quickly get you some relief. The way the ER treated you is disgusting. I am so surprised they didn't keep you the first time.

Thanks All!

Well..... Chicken story or doctor story first.... I'll just start at the beginning.

Got up this morning. Twiddle Dee and Twiddle Dum still under the porch. I was running late so didn't have time to prepare my defense mechanisms so I grabbed a tennis racket on the way out the door. I was sleep deprived, in pain and grumpy. I rolled my walker right over the spider that popped up between the porch boards. I started towards the garage,/barn when Twiddle Dee (the old one) decided to do that running hop thing flashing his spurs. I pretended he was a tennis ball and took my shot. Missed but he sure was surprised. He slunk back under the porch to regroup. I made it the rest of the way unharmed.

Went to my meeting. How do you feel? Are you in any pain?. What are your symptoms? So started going over everything and suddenly I find out my kidney stone is not bobbing about in my kidney.... Oh no.... It's already in my tubes obstructing me. But that's ok. I can take Tylenol for the pain and have it removed......by that "new doctor" that I want to use....Then they went into their "Of course we already have a urologist on our team that is prepared to go in thru your back to retrieve the stone. We've used him to put stents in during one of your other surgeries." I just looked at them and informed them I was using the new young doctor located 90 minutes closer to my home who was able to use a laser and perform the surgery as out patient. Shock.... Gasp .... Looking at me like I am crazy. And then I reminded them that both of the stents failed during that surgery. It was one of the deciding factors for me. Total silence. They practically ran from the room... All of them saying well we better let you get to your appointment with your "new" urologist. I think some of them didn't like that I would not use the previous doctor. (Honestly... He's older, doesn't believe in pain meds, and his hands shake alittle bit now. If I'd seen the Shakey hands before he would never have gotten near me.) We did have a "clarification" of how I have decided to handle other health issues and the processes we would utilize along with which doctor I would be seeing for what. They all seemed to agree with that part.

So then had to drive back towards my house 90 miles to see my new urologist. He is young, willing to think outside the box, believes in pain meds, and is able to perform the outpatient surgery (laser ureteroscopy with basket) next Friday. He won an award in "best Dallas" doctor's. I have several tests to do before we can do the surgery so that's the soonest. I liked him. He was straight forward, brief and factual. He didn't act like he was my best friend or a psychologist. He assured me that he does at least 4 of these types of extractions a week..or was it a day? He knows my history and will treat me accordingly. He does not feel the need to coordinate this with my other physicians.(That made me sorta pause...but I dunno) He said it was imperative to get this done asap. I will have a stent in for 5 to 15 days after surgery - depending on my inflammation. I will take antibiotics before and after the surgery.

Drove home tired and apprehensive. Walked out of barn and Twiddle Dee flew up at me again. I caught him to my chest..... Dropped to my knees and held his little beak to the ground until he stopped moving.... Repeatedly saying the word no. I eventually let go of him, he didn't move, I thought I had killed him, suddenly he sprang up, squeaking and flapping his wings, turned his butt towards me a sprayed me with chicken poop. (What? I thought that I had shown him who was boss) I retaliated by squirting him when he ran under the porch. Darn Bird.

So we both are squared off and the fight is on. I'm sorta afraid he's gonna kick my butt. The poop thing really makes me want to run away. Lol...

Wow! Good for you on both counts - standing up to the rooster and standing up to those doctors!!! Fantastic, I am so impressed with you! That new urologist sounds so much better able to do the job, I am glad you stuck to your guns. Now I am going to urge you to stick to your guns with the rooster. It sounds like he does not know what to make of the "new" you. Can't wait to read the next chapter.

I'm sorry you're dealing with more health issues. Sorry they didn't give you adequate pain meds either (that shot is a joke...guessing it was Toradol? And Tylenol, lol...).

Sounds like you have a plan with the new doc. Hope everything goes well and you get relief soon. I once changed dentists because mine started to get shaky hands ... no way I would allow a surgeon near me like that! Good decision to dump the old doc.

That rooster thought he was going to get you back lol. Just stand your ground and if he does it again hold him down and rub his face in his own poop. Remember ,,, you are in charge not him!!

You did well, Padawan smile

Yay on your dr decision, and it seems your other docs bowed at it.

This came to mind re the rooster encounter...are you left-handed by chance?

Clo, good luck with your treatment next week. I wouldn't be concerned about the dr's comment about not keeping all of your drs in the loop. Medical records are now all electronic so your other drs will have access to your records.

Until the next rooster story.

The new doctor sounds so, so much better than your old doctors. Medical treatment should not vary this much from doctor to doctor, or hospital to hospital, but so often there's huge discrepancies in treatment according to where you go: it infuriates me. That said, I'm just glad you found this new doctor in time.

Thanks all for your responses,

I am a strange little bird. I started out as a south paw but trained myself to use my right hand while writing. (Actually...It was the nuns-they broke a wooden ruler over my left hand and tied my left hand down to my side to make me use my right hand. Boy was my Dad ticked..he pulled me out of that school...but the damage was done. I refused to be left handed.) Totally messed me up. I tie my shoes left handed, golf left handed.....fight left handed..... Lol..

Today might be a better day.

The neighbor came over and got the roosters. They are going into the rolling chicken pen she has. She brought a couple of hens over so they could keep eating my bugs and spiders. Her daughters will be over to check on them this weekend.

The new doctor called in more zofran for me and some Norco. I've never taken Norco before. I'm sorta scared to try it--but if it starts hurting like last night I might have to... Lol... Who am I kidding...??? He gave me 15 pills to last a week. I am hoping it's enough. They want me to try Tramadol in the am, and Norco in the pm. Let's hope I last the week til surgery without going to the ER, have surgery & recover quickly.... and then get to play Rocky....
