I have had UC for 6 years. The first couple of years I was on and off in mild flares… some mucus, some blood, some urgency - not every day. I have been on Humira for 2 1/2 years and Apriso for 4 years. Since Humira I have not had a flare. All of a sudden on Sunday I started to have stomach pain and gas cramps. More than when I have had a flare before. The pains got better as the day progressed but have still been there on and off since. I have no blood or mucus (which I always have in a flare) my stools are not liquid but they are not normal - mostly a type 5 on the Bristol stool scale (once or twice a 6). I added enemas in 2 nights ago and put in a call to my GI this morning. I have used the enemas before when I have felt boarderline and they have got me back on track but this seems different. I thought maybe a bug or food born illness but it’s not going away. Any thoughts - thanks

It could have been something you picked up. Are you on probiotics?
How long before the cramping did you have stool changes...eg smaller or harder to pass, and how many times a day are you having bms?
Any consistent urgency?
If food doesn't account for some of the change, it's a good idea to add the enemas nightly. Make sure you have enough refills.

Let us know the response from your doctor.

I haven't had this experience of rapid-onset symptoms with my UC--only with stomach bugs. If the pain gets worse and localizes to your lower right quadrant, get checked out for appendicitis too. In January I had come and go gastro symptoms, which turned into miserable gas pains that resolved but then changed into pain (but not terrible) in my lower right abdomen and turned out to be my appendix.

But more often my experience of weird stomach stuff has been germs I picked up. I hope this works out well for you one way or another soon!

Impossible to say without labwork. I don't always have flares start the same exact way.

The pain I had started in my stomach and then was in my lower left quadrant and sometimes lower left back ache. The pain turned cramping was a pain that comes and goes. The cramping came with my 1st stool on Sunday and then turned to stomach pain and then to cramping. I am not having consistent urgency. I can even just ride out the cramping pain sometimes without going to the bathroom. My stools are easy to pass. Not constipation but small and come out quickly without effort. I do take probiotics I take 1 visbiome a day but increased it to 2 on Sunday. about a week before this my Mom and I ate somewhere and both had similar symptoms to this but it only lasted me (and her) a couple of hours and then I was fine for 10 days so that is why I questioned food issues or flare.

My doctors office has a 24 hour return phone call policy. I didn’t hear from them I will be contacting them again in the morning because 9 am will be 24 hours. They usually get back to me the day of. I am wondering if my Dr is out of the office. I am sure he will order some stool tests since he has done that before. I like him (he will sometimes call me himself) but I don’t like the system that everything goes through to get a call back. It changed about 2 years ago and it’s harder to get through to the nurses.

I love when a doctor calls your him or herself. You're lucky. I used to have one of those but he moved out of state. Hope you get answers and start feeling better soon.
