The 1st bone scan 2 years ago showed osteoporosis in the spine, osteopenia in the hips. No drug was prescribed. Was told to take vitamin D and calcium.
I had a second bone scan and there was statistically significant interval decline.
How do you treat osteoporosis? Which drug do you use? What are the main side effects?
I started to read and these drugs are truly frightening.
I cannot take a pill because of stomach issues. This leaves me with infusion or injection.
I want to be prepared when I make an appointment with endocrinologist.

I did 18 months of Forteo injections, this was not long after it came out, it was a long slog too. I didn't have any trouble while on it. Since Forteo has been on the market newer medications are available.

You can do a search on the medications & print out the information & take it with you to the appt. Depending on which medication the dr recommends, ask about the potential side effects. I know it's scary reading about side effects, but it does not mean you will have any. This is a CYA thing.

Make a list of questions so you don't forget something. Good luck with your appt.

Prolia. One shot every six months. It works very well for me.

Reclast (zoledronic acid) is an infusion that my very smart endocrinologist says only needs to be given every 2 years. No side effects at all in my case and I would opt for Reclast or Prolia rather than not treating. You are wise to avoid oral alendronates like Fosamax which increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding. Take care of any needed dental surgery before you start.

Thank you for all your replies. Looks like reclast would be my 1st option.

naturalcurl, what do you do if you are in pain and need a tooth extraction after you start the medication? Do you know?

Your dentist and endocrinologist would be your best sources of information. Likely a necessary procedure like an extraction would be done.
There might be reluctance to perform an elective procedure like dental implants. My dentist and endocrinologist have slightly different opinions so it would be interesting to hear about anything you learn.

I have a friend who has osteoporosis. She’s had the pills before and then the shots (not sure which ones). She stopped the shots when she had to have a dental implant. After that she went on the estrogen patch as that’s supposed to be a low dose and hopefully help her bone density. I don’t know the results of subsequent bone scans however, to know if the patch is helping.

I have mild osteoporosis and chose not to take medication at this point and just take Calcium and Vit. D & K and try to get exercise. I was scared of the side effects. Good luck with whatever you decide on.
