I didn’t want to disrupt Rusty’s thread with this question. Hoping stray dog will pop in to answer this, too.

So in Rusty’s thread he said,
Welchol seems to be popular with people who have IBS-D related to gallbladder removal.

My son had his gallbladder removed a few years ago and often suffers explosive diarrhea when he eats wrong. (He does not have UC). Just wondering if any of you have experience with it and if I should point my son in its direction.

FlowersGal, yes it is often prescribed after gallbladder removal. The bile acids attach to it, usually fatty foods are often the culprit. My SIL was put on it right after she had her gallbladder taken out, everything just shot right through her.

I was prescribed it for IBS-D, a lot of us in the crohns forum took it.

He can always ask his pcp. If for some reason he gets told no, have him take Imodium. To this day I try to keep Imodium on hand at all times.

Hi. Also. For the record. Old GI tried me once on Questran powder. Was supposed to do the same thing as this drug Welchol. Well, old GI was awful with instructions on how to take a drug and I’m pretty sure when I tried the Questran powder a ways back that it wasn’t successful because I didn’t take it correctly.

Anyway, when this topic came up with the new GI in my most recent appointment. He brought up two drugs to try. For IBS-D. Questran and Welchol. I said let’s try the Welchol and he said, we can do that. And so far, so good, just 1 tablet a day has had an impact and tomorrow I’m going up to 1 tablet 2 times a day. I’ll post what happens in the other thread. He asked me before this conversation if I still had my gallbladder and I said no. In the appointment I didn’t see the connection to the question. I learned that later when I got home and did some web searching.

Rusty.
