Hello all 53 year old male was diagnosed in my late 20s with irritable bowl syndrome. With diet and doing some athletics I've been able to keep control. I only took nexium daily for stomach acid problems. However this past Friday morning woke up to several diarrhea every 30 min of so the left side of my stomach would fell like it wants to burst then I run to the bathroom would start sweating profusely then after relieving my self I would get cold. Had a temp of 100.8 this went on for two days couldn't eat and barely could drink anything. Then when there was no food left then I would pass red blood. I got scared and ended up going to the er. They gave me a cat scan and said I have colitis they didn't say ulcerative just colitis. I was prescribed dycyclomine and sulfameth/trimethoprim. 4 days in and I'm not going to bathroom every half hour more like every hr and a half. Still see blood not a major amount but enough to concern me. Is there anything I can do to help recover quicker? I don't drink alcohol at all and don't drink soda. I do smoke cigarettes but hardly smoking now. I normally don't eat alot of greasy or spicy foods. Just picked up some probiotics. I would like to get back to work soon and playing disc golf again. Just looking for any home remedies that might help me along the way. Or what should I stay far away from. Thanks for reading this and look forward to some replies.

Usually when someone is seen in ER they are told to follow up with their own dr. I suggest that you call your pcp today & get an appointment. You need to know which type of colitis you have.

Good luck.

I currently have no health insurance so at this moment I'm on my own. Plan on getting insurance as soon as I can.

Unfortunately you need a colonoscopy to determine if you have UC or an infectious colitis. A bland diet will not cure you but it can help not irritate your gut more than it is already.

Bone broth, eggs, well cooked vegetables, chicken and fish are all usually good.

Starting to eat more today. I am signing up for insurance this week boss giving me a raise to cover it. Then I will see specialist probably take a month or two so these tips help. Thank you so much. Wish you well.

I do have one prednisone tablet left from 8 months ago when I had a hemorrhoid that turned into a 6 day abcess until it finally busted on it own. That was horror. Should I at least take the last one ?

No on the prednisone.

You very well may have infectious colitis. That's what the ER must have been thinking as they prescribed you antibiotics. Did they order any stool tests? You should have stool cultures done as the first thing.

When you are looking for insurance, find something that has good drug coverage. Meds for UC can be very expensive. So sorry you have to deal with this without insurance.

1 Prednisone tablet wouldn't do anything and until you know what exactly is the problem it could cause more harm. Were any stool tests done at the ER?

No blood test they said they would run it along with a cat scan and urine test. They ran the cat scan and urine test. prescribed meds and let me on my way. Told me to follow up with specialist. I should of asked about it but I didn't I figured they knew best what to do. I'm on day 5. First day was horrible throwing up 3 times what looked like gooey spit but not much of it. Of course heavy diarrhea I'd say ever half hour for the first 2 days I was in the bathroom. Couldn't eat hardly drink. Day 3 started seeing red blood but only a small amount I'd say tablespoon but was seeing it in every bowl movement at least every hour. Day 4 every two hrs and today Day 5 every 3 or 4 hrs. I am able to eat and drinking plenty of water. I feel much better but still seeing blood in just about every bathroom visit. I did have a anal hemorrhoid about 8 months ago that abcessed and took 6 days to breat so i am hoping the blood is coming from there. I am trying not to get nervous but until the blood goes away that's hard to do. Gas x has helped with the bloating. They prescribed me sulfameth/trimethoprim which honestly I haven't taken I told them I was allergic to sulfer drugs when the first nurse asked me about any allergies I had to meds. They also prescribed me dicyclomine 20 MG and I am taking that. Also ondansetron for nausea but I haven't needed it. Started to eat again but small bland meals and steamed salmon or lake trout. I am feeling better each day goes by. I was at least able to drive to the store and pic up some gas x cause it was the bloating that was making me have most of the pain. Just been trying to relax and occasionally take a brief walks to the lake. I'm not back to work until Friday or Sat cause the hurricane is forcing us to close so a extra couple days should help. I am signing up for insurance this week. So going to be a little bit before I can make it to a specialist. Any tips are so welcome.

Sorry left out some info. I didn't have any stool left to give them. I didnt go to er until 2.5 days after it started i couldn't eat anything during that time . So there was nothing I could give them at that time. I didn't go right away to er as I was diagnosed years ago with ibs d. So I thought I was a stomach flu or the frozen burger with raw bacon in it I cooked the night before it started wasn't cooked enough and maybe that set me off

Did you have stool sample kit to do at home?
You need to ask for one.

I understand the no insurance situation. If this is infectious colitis, you do need an antibiotic that you are not allergic to. You may want to consider taking your hospital papers & go to an Urgent Care & just explain you are allergic to sulfa drugs & see if they will write a script for another antibiotic. A probiotic will not take care of an infection, you really need to be careful.

Take care.

Hoping you know when you sign up for insurance NOT to say the ER said you have colitis.

Here’s hoping you “just “ have a stomach bug/food poisoning.

Lol I'm not that dumb but thanks. Turns out I called a doctor I seen a year ago when I was just having a cold or flu and I had to send them everything the er gave me and he prescribed me a new antibiotic that does not have sulfur in it. Told me to keep taking the dicyclomine and said he prescribed me prednisone and once I have insurance he will give me referral to the gi doc. I haven't picked them up cause he called it in at 430 and pharmacy closed at 5. Not sure they will be open as a hurricane coming thru tomorrow. Will check in morning. I did pass two stools today looks like there trying to come back together. Blood still there though but looks like it is decreasing. I do notice about 6 inches from my belly button where my leg connects to my body I a harder lumpy area. If I gently massage the area the gas comes out it shrinks and I feel a ton better. Not sure of the name of the antibiotic until I pick it up. I'd assume it will probably screw up my bowls again but we'll see. Thanks again everyone time to bake a chicken breat with oregano and some rice and call it a night.

BTW I am wondering when I was 27 now 53 I had a procedure similar to a colonoscopy but I was awake for it. They stuck a tube in with camera pumped it with air and felt like my stomach was going to explode looked around then released the air and moved it and did it again around 6 times. They found a couple polyps and removed them and said they were benine. They did mention I had a tight turn somewhere in there and said it might cause problems later. I wonder if this is the same spot that gets hard and after massaging it everything releases and i feel much better and that spot isn't hard anymore. It's about a 3 inch area. Btw my father before he passed from a heart attacke had stomach problems. But he was the type that would drink nothing but coffee all day then come home and it a big meal loaded with salt and then he would be hunched over in pain on the toilet. He would of been 47 at that time died at 63. He was a heavy smoker as well and also suffered with lots of acid problems.

Dyccyclomine is an odd choice for GI infections. That antibiotic is known to cause diarrhea. You really need stool tests done to check for infections. Please stay hydrated.

They said it helps relax stomach spasms. My stools are beginning to form again. They don't look good but much better then a couple days ago.

I think he was prescribed dicyclomine (bentyl), the anti-spasmodic, not the antibiotic doxycycline.

I hope today you are able to pick up the antibiotics. When taking the antibiotics you want to wait a couple of hours before taking the probiotic.

You had a flex sig at 23, there is no telling what the tight turn was. I am assuming you went 30 years without any further testing, so I wouldn't let myself get hung up on that.

I suggest eating the foods suggested in an effort to keep your gut calmed down as much as possible. Personally, I would not go GF at this juncture, so far everything is pointing towards infectious colitis. You need to be careful cruising the internet, there is plenty of misinformation out there.

Sorry, I got confused and was thinking of an antibiotic. You're right. I hope you don't have UC and it's just an infection and will pass.

Just picked up scripts doc gave me metronidazole and prednisone. You mentioned not to take the probiotics until 2 hrs later after. when should I take the prednisone? 4am last night and 7am this morning I feel like everything came out of me. Getting hot flashes as well. Temp is normal just burning up. Eating now so I could take the antibiotic. Says to eat with food. Muffin and egg white and semi ripe banana. I hope this is bacterial. I have been a thin guy since high school 5'9 140 and can't afford to lose any more weight. I haven't checked myself on scale cause I don't want to stress myself out. Thank you again
