Just noticed doc only gave me 3 of the prednisone 10mg is that going to be enough. Says take one a day or every other day should I take it now. I just took the antibiotic after eating and slammed down some water. I'd like to know if this is bacterial where the heck did I come from. Nobody I work with is sick and the people I play disc golf with are not sick. I'm starting to think it was that frozen burger with bacon and cheese the night before all of this started.

The probiotic will not interfere with the prednisone, really don't understand why he gave it to you. Infections can be picked up in food pretty easy.

I took the prednisone already I can't wait any longer this is just too much. I'm sure some of you think man thus 53 year old sounds like a whimp. I just never been thru anything so debilitating in my life. I do wish all of you didn't have the health issues your going through and do really wish you all the best.

No, 3 pills of prednisone will do nothing. Not sure what that doctor was thinking. For UC flares, we are usually on prednisone for 6 weeks or more, tapering off to lower doses after the first 2ish weeks.

Did they test you for infections? Metronidazole might help if it is a GI infection. But if it's an infection, you don't want to be taking prednisone (that will lower your immunity and not help an infection). Please request stool samples at the least if your symptoms continue--you need a GI infectious panel done and a calprotectin stool test would be helpful for inflammation but this is a pricier test. If you don't have insurance, is there a free clinic or somewhere with a sliding scale that may be able to help you?

And no, none of us think you're a wimp. This stuff is seriously debilitating and can be extremely painful.

Continue to stay hydrated. Be aware Metronidazole can cause a nasty metallic taste in your mouth. To avoid this if it happens, put the pill on a spoonful of applesauce or yogurt and then swallow, not letting the pill touch your tongue.

With no insurance yet everything else will have to wait until then. I won't take the prednisone then but I am feeling a bit better now. Still get these hot flashes and instead of being in bathroom every two hrs it's now been 6 hrs since the last time. I still think it was a uncooked burger that had raw bacon in it that didn't cook the inside well enough that caused this mess. Only time will tell. I will keep the update. Thank you all.

I'm lactose intolerance so yogurt never made me feel good and I try to eat a low fodmap diet anyway even before this started so applesauce is out. I am able to eat pineapple and blueberries just no fruits with seeds or pits in them.

Sarah it may not be a uc flare it could be salmonella or E coli that I'm dealing with. Don't know right now until I get more tests. Thanks

Doesn't have to be yogurt or applesauce...just any food. You may not get that side effect, but I do and it makes even water taste gross and metallic.

It's a good sign the bathroom trips are lessening. It won't hurt or help to take 3 prednisone. Hope you feel all better soon. Ice packs to the forehead can help with that hot flash feeling.

I haven't had to go to bathroom since I took the first does of antibiotic and the first presidone almost 9 hrs ago. So I'm hoping for the best. Will try ice pac as I still am getting that hot flash. Got to eat and take my next antibiotic dose. Thanks for the tips.

That's good to hear. No problem. I've been hospitalized for infectious colitis twice before. The symptoms can be quite severe and very similar to UC.

BTW Sarah. The first antibiotic pill I took this morning I didn't notice taste or care about it as I was desperate to take it. However just took the second and your right on. It tastes way bad. Going to have to puree some of my fruits next time before I do that again

Yeah! It's terrible, and for me, it starts making everything taste bad, even water!! But if you take it with a bite of food, it works! Pureed fruit is a good idea.

Any chance dose metronidazole also make a dry spot in throat. Every time I swallow I feel a dry spot or like something is there. Drink water or eat and a min later still there.

I don't remember experiencing that myself. You're taking it with plenty of water?

Yes drinking 80 Oz of water daily adding some pedalight to some of the bottles as well. Straight pedalight dosent taste so great. On a positive note. I woke up this morning as i have all week to go to bathroom. I figured it had to be 3 to 4am and when got out of bathroom checked time and it was 630am. Got at least 6.5 hrs of straight sleep.

Whatever you do, finish the entire script, do not stop taking it when you feel like you are over the hump. The bad after taste is awful, I never had a dry spot either in my throat from it. Hopefully you can find a food product to take with it.

That's good to hear. Do you have acid reflux? I think that can cause a similar lump feeling in the throat maybe.

Yes I have had acid reflux on and off for awhile that's why I stick to the low fodmap diet and I was taking nexium for a long time to control it. Haven't taken any nexium since this issue started but also don't feel the acid like I used to either since this problem started.

Also loving that applesauce trick makes even taking my probiotic easier to swallow. On that note. Is doctors choice 60 billion probiotic a good choice. That's what I'm using

I'm glad the applesauce trick is helping! I never had any luck with probiotics so have no advice on that. Maybe someone else will chime in.

When I start getting that hot feeling I test my temp with digital mouth thermometer and I get 99.1 or 99.2 when I feel normal again I'm at 98.7 is the antibiotic possiblly causing this. Or is my body trying to battle the infection causing it? Or should I buy one of those touchless thermometer you dot the forehead with?

Starting to notice when I'm standing and walking temp is normal laying down for a couple hrs goes back up to 99.3. Also I do think the spot in throat is acid. Is peppermint tums OK to take?

I'm not sure, I'm sorry. If your temp isnt very high, Id probably just continue to monitor it and see if it goes away once youve been on the antibiotic longer. That hot flash thing really scares me when I've had it because I often feel like I might pass out. I never have though. For me, it has been tied to having a BM sometimes.
Did you go back to work? I had to take several weeks off when I first got UC. I was very, very ill though and had been for a while.
Peppermint Tums is fine.
