Hello All,

Can you please advise on the food that our gut can tolerate during long international flights like 16+ hours and total travel time of 24+ hours ? I heard most of the food in economy ticket zone is processed and frozen. So with limited options what food can we eat ? If we have to buy from airport what is the best food to pick ? Also I’m planning to keep low on food 1 day prior to travel and after travel due to the sleep deprivation, stress..etc,
Really appreciate if you have any suggestions for a smooth travel and also keeping the strength of the body with safe food choices .

I haven't been on a flight longer than 8 hours since I developed UC, but I found that bringing my own food on the plane was a great option. I also requested a gluten and dairy free meal from the airline and was able to eat most of what they gave me. (I don't generally eat gluten or dairy anyway so this was within my normal diet). I was using Rowasa nightly during my last travel so I had to skip a night each way but I was alright. I was coming out of a flare up but was feeling fine at that point.

Thanks for your response. We are not allowed to bring our food into the Terminal right. What are better food options to buy inside airport like bread, yogurt ..etc that can be tolerated with the gas that accumulates in our stomach at the heights that plane travels.

I've always brought my own food into the terminal. It's only on arrival (depending on where you're travelling) that some products are banned.

If you can find some individually wrapped grass fed beef sticks without a lot of preservatives, I liked those for traveling. Granola-type bars, (look for some with little sugar). Or gluten free crackers along with individual wrapped cheese sticks. You could slice up some apples, soak them in a bit of orange juice to keep them from turning brown. Bananas. Applesauce cups (no added sugar).

Find out what meal options your airline will provide, then bring whatever food supplement can safely travel w/o refrigeration. Maybe a natural peanut or almond butter with graham, rice, or soda crackers? Some plain pound cake slices? That choice also depends on any food intolerances you may have, such as dairy. Natural applesauce cups and bananas could help you with hydration/fiber issues; then you need some plastic disposable waste bag, too. Avoid carbonated drinks on plane, if you don't already do that-- to help minimize gas. Be sure to pack your UC med(s) in carry-on bag. Bon voyage! / Old Hat (40+ yrs with left-sided UC; in remission taking Colazal)

Hard boiled eggs work great for me.

Thanks for all your replies. Is it ok to take probiotics (ALIGN PROBIOTIC) while traveling inside the flight ? It doesn’t need any refrigeration. Taking once a day in the morning.

Yes, you can take your Align with you while traveling. I put all of my medications in a zip lock bag in my carry luggage. As long as everything is in it's original bottle there is no problem.

Enjoy your trip.
