Anyone else struggle with vaccines? A couple of weeks ago I had my second Shingrix vaccine (b/c of Xeljanz) and the flu shot at the same time. A couple days later I started seeing blood and mucus. I have restarted Lialda and rowasa (mesalamine tablets and enemas) and that seems to be helping, but I'm nervous. I also had some GI symptoms/flare after some of the covid vaccines, but not others.

Does anyone else flare after certain vaccines or have strategies for handling them? I had the first Shinxrix vaccine and prevenar 13 at the same time a few months ago and didn't have any GI side effects. That time I was prepared to be wiped out by them and rested for a couple days. This time, I didn't really rest much. Maybe that's why I had a worse reaction or because these vaccines were different.

Of course there is always the possibility that it's just a coincidence.

Current meds: Xeljanz 10 mg twice a day. Restarted Lialda 4.8 mg and Rowasa

Sorry to read that you are struggling. It's hard to say because in the past members were kind of all over the place on this subject. Some had issues & some didn't. My dr only allows one at a time with a 2 week period in between the shots.

Hopefully whatever is going on is short lived. Have you contacted your dr?

Take care.

I think that Straydog's doctor takes a wiser approach. Most UCers have a wonky immune system so it makes sense NOT to subject those cells to a potential stimulus overload. / Old Hat (40+ yrs with left-sided UC; in remission taking Colazal)

I get them spaced apart as well. We do the same for our cat.

I split up vaccines whenever possible and do the same for my children, it seems to help minimize negative reactions and also helps determine the cause of reactions when they happen. Hope you feel better soon.

I had a flare start last January with a coincidental timing with an MRNA vaccine, but I think it may have been brewing before the vaccine.

Since I started a biologic without much warning in the spring and had to get a bunch of vaccines in the aftermath, I've done them mostly one at a time, spaced out, to try to minimize my body's inflammatory response. This does seem to help me, and the public health nurses are all in favour of the spaced out approach.
