Hey guys, i used to have manuka honey a lot, but in the past 6 months i’ve associated it with worsening my flares. So i’ve quietly avoided it. But i love manuka. Am i being crazy? have you ever heard of manuka honey causing damage on anyone with UC?

I sincerely doubt it has anything to do with a flare. Honey can cause softer/looser/diarrhea stool...depending on how much one consumes or how sensitive or allergic one is to it.

What symptoms were/are you having?

Thanks for asking. I just did my 3rd loading dose of inflectra which looks like i’m flunking. So i started 40mg pred last night. And already seeing results. prednison never fails thank God. And i’m having severe cramps, decreased bleeding.
What i used to notice when eating manuka was worsening bleeding. Idk why i associated it with Manuka.
Anyways… is it an overdose being on inflectra + 40 mg pred AND wanting to do hydrocortisone enema on top of them?

What you are describing with the cramping is called tenemus. Ask your dr or his nurse to call in a script of generic Bentyl, it's an antispasmodic. It also helps with the straining like feeling when you know you are finished going to the toilet. The spasms can make a person just miserable. Works very well for a lot of us.

I don't think it's the honey either.

Retention mesalamine enemas 4g will also be of help... if you can use it.

I've used it for my sore throats ,coughs, colds and gut. I'm almost 100% sure that I've read about Manuka honey being raw and pure and acting as an antiviral or antimicrobial or antifungal. If thats the case then of course I'd think it can cause a herx. I don't think your imagining it. Same can happen when using ginger, garlic, cilantro, oregano for me at least just like honey. Some people have no reactions to honey or any of these things. I'll find the link I'll post here

1st link that popped up. Are you sure you don't have sibo rather the uc? I remember tons of GI docs I saw for years misdme and swore up and down that I had just uc or chronic disease. Then it was gastritis and gerd.. Then it was magically IBS that I just suddenly woke up with. Yea nope found out it was sibo causing diareah for me and let me tell you it was at the point where I couldn't even hold water down or make it anywhere outside my house without running for a toilet. Got so bad , I had quite a few accidents, sorry for the TMI 😂. I've heard keto diet can literally stop the diareah incidents, are you doing keto ? Try it. Here's the link for the manuka honey.

Yet, manuka honey contains a compound called methylglyoxal, which was shown to worsen symptoms of IBS like diarrhea in one animal study ( 6 ).Jul 28, 2021

Thanks "MedicalNerd" I'd love to check out that article. But for now I'm going to avoid Manuka.
I am having so much gas and cramping and what looks like a wound on my hemies because it drips blood like crazy every time I go. the whole bowl turns red.
I'm still on pred 40 mg/day + started dicyclomine hcl as needed + mesalamine supps.
Dicyclomine looks like it's making me super tired so i'm taking it easy with it.
I pushed myself to do some light exercising and walking, It made me feel better.
I'm also taking the Aloe Vera leaf gel 2 times per day, peppermint tea, Gas-X pills, and some Oregano tea. And all of these combined cannot control my gas

I looked at SIBO's signs and symptoms and I clearly don't have that, so I can rule that out.
for now i'm just sticking to a low residue diet, low fiber until i get some control over the flare
My stool is all over the place, can start with D and proceed with some decent formed thin stool, then more D and blood and just a mess.
The poop comes out green for sure. I wonder what the green color could mean

Have you been checked for c-diff? Green diarrhea, cramping was an indicator for me. If it's been a while since you were tested I would ask for a stool test.

Maybe you should let your doc know that you tried home fmt. I know you said your family member's stool was tested -- what was it tested for? There are a lot of different pathogens that could cause problems for you but not the donor. Your doc might want to do a broad panel stool test and not just focus on c-diff.
