Is VSL#3 safe with Azathioprine / Imuran?

Hi

Does anyone know if VSL#3 interacts with Azathioprine

I have just started with Azathioprine and currently at 50mg / day which will be increased to 100mg / day in a couple of weeks. This is along with a corresponding pred taper

I just read that patients need to avoid vaccines with live virus while on this medicine. Wondering if VSL#3 which contains Live freeze dried bacteria also needs to be avoided. I need to travel so was planning to take VSL#3 to help and reduce cramping and urgency

I took vsl3 and azathioprine together for about 18 months. No issues except when first starting vsl3 - it's quite strong so i recommend to build the dose up slowly. I had a reaction a bit like I'd taken laxatives for the first day or two - and that was with 1/4 of the recommended dose - then i felt better.

I think it would be fine. Maybe double check with your GI.

I had an appointment with my GI today and confirmed that it is okay to take it with Azathioprine

Incidentally, caught a traveler's diarrhea during my travel (incl. my family members, mine was severe) and VSL#3 helped control it

That's good it helped! I always wanted to try it but it was too expensive for me.
