Does anyone have a food intolerance to beef? Or even know if that is possible or how rare it is?

Anyone can have an intolerance or allergic reaction to anything. Over on the Allergies/Asthma board, we get all sorts of allergies/intolerances and one thing I found is that the majority of the people there don't have an actual allergy to the product but the chemicals/antibiotics/hormones they inject into the animals. Once they change to a free range/organic product, their intolerances/allergic symptoms go away.

Oh and I absolutely adore beef products!  I have never had any troubles digesting it but I know some people here just can't digest beef while flaring.

My son noticed that he can't handle red meat (especially steak or a big hamburger) or corn. They both send him running almost as soon as he swallows.

Red Meat is extremely difficult for your body to digest.  Especially if you don't eat for awhile or have a digestive problem ie UC.

Firstly, remember that it doesn't hit the colon initially. The digestion for beef would take longer than other foods, so by the time it hits the colon...it's been in the digestive tract for a while.

But, you may have an inability to break down the proteins in beef or other meats.

I would suggest firstly, that you try a digestive enzyme to help break it down. If that doesn't help...then nix it from your diet.

Damo..what symptoms are you having from the beef? How is it prepared when you're eating it?

Quincy,

I've been keeping a food dairy to try and match my symptoms to food. I've kept a note of all the main culprits dairy, wheat, fries etc. Can't really see a pattern. I fully accept that you believe that UC is not caused by food it's just that I suspect that I have something else going on alongside / on top of UC. The only food I havent elimianted is meat and in particular beef. As you can imagine we in Ireland eat a lot of beef! I eat it a lot in minced form but I also it as a plain beef dish at a restaraunt.

What digestive enzyme should I try - could you give me the chemical name as opposed to the brand name cos it might be sold under different brand over here.

Try this site to get the info you might need.

There are digestive enzymes combinations..it's worth a try initially.

Do you eat what's called "mince"...ground beef, carrots and onions over potatoes?  My grandmother (Scottish) used to make it...I loved it.

After submitting to the craving, I ordered an Angus burger yesterday at a local restaurant.  Starting early this morning it has been one run after the other to the bathroom.  I have been in a minor flare for some time now and there seems to be nothing I ingest that doesn't cause some diarrhea but today is continuous and my rear feels like I sat on a baseball all night.  I was already exhausted from a two day trip to Asheville.  I barely made it through the Biltmore tour and the trip home.  I'm not waiting until tonight.  I'm starting the Canasa right now as I'm not going anywhere today or for a while.  I have an appt. next month and another colonoscopy in Oct.  I'm more apprehensive about this one because of my present troubles and the dysplasia found last time.  I'd give anything for just  a few days relief from this.

I have a difficult time eating burgers but not steak or other lean beef. Things high in fat really seem to bother me in general so I don't think it is the beef but rather the fat content.
