Hello All.  My name is Heather and I'm pretty new to all of this.  I started having diarrhea memorial day weekend....thought I just had food poisioning and read somewhere online that it could last up to a month.  Then, I started to get really bad fevers in week #2 and went to the doctor.  He did all sorts of tests and everything came back negative.  He just told me to eat a bland diet and see how it goes.  Then I couldn't keep anything down in week #3 and finally I passed A LOT of blood in my BM.  So, off to the hospital I went.  They put me on Cipryl and Flagyll (not sure if I spelled those right) and I was getting better.  They did a sigmoid scope on me the third day I was there.  The GI doctor kept saying it was an infection, and the infectious disease doctor kept saying it was colitus.  So, after 8 days in the hospital, my BMs weren't formed yet, but they were better then what they were when I came in, I felt a ton better, and they still had no idea what happened to me....and they sent me home.  Three weeks later, I was still in the same state I was when I came home from the hospital.  I called the GI doctor up and he put me on asacol right away and I felt a lot better.  I had a colonoscopy done but he couldn't do a whole one because my intestines were so inflammed.  I came in for my results and he told me I probably had ulcerative colitus, but he STILL wasn't positive I didn't have crohns. SO, I get to have another colonscopy once my intestines are better.   Ever since I've been reading books about UC from the local library and researching things online.   And thats my story :)  I look foward to talking to everyone and learning as much as I can!

Hi and welcome to Healingwell. Definately learn everything you can about Uc because as we like to say around here - knowledge is power. Once you understand your disease and get it under control, the less scarier it will be. If you should have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Hi Heather .... welcome to the forum!

It's great to hear the doc has you on both oral and rectal 5ASA meds. It takes time for them to start doing their stuff...so, patience is a must with them.

Just to let you know that you should taper the rectal meds and not go off them cold turkey, for when the time comes.
They can be tapered to find a maintenance dosage rather than the goal of being off them.

Hi Heather,

I was 24 too when I was dx'd and I am lucky that I have been responding really well to meds. My best adivce, take your meds, even if you feel ok! I flare when I don't take them like I am supposed to.

Sorry to hear you had to go through all that! I had to convince my primary care it was not Olestra from Wow chips that was doing that to me. Now I have an awesome primary care and GI
