Does anyone take Acidophilus as a dietary supplement? Is it ok to take if you have UC?

I've started taking Holland & Barretts Acidophilus, can't say it's making a huge difference, but I don't think there's any contra indications

I take a lot of the Holland & Barrett supplements as well. They provide a good range. Do you use any other products of theirs?

I take acidophilus pearls. Do a search at the top of the page by probiotics. We have talked about these a ton. You may find some useful info.

I'm also taking their Fish oil, Caprylic acid and had a bottle of their Aloe Vera Juice. I'm now taking AloeElite capsules. I'm really keen on finding alternatives to prescription drugs if I can. I will never ever take Prednisolone again if I can help it.

Coalfire,

I couldn't agree with you more. I'm getting off Pred and using all the Holland & Barrett supplements too. I'm using most of what you listed. Have you tried their Digestive Enzymes.

No I haven't, but maybe I should! The only problem for me is trying to juggle all this - the aloe vera has to be taken on an empty stomach and the acidophilus can't be taken with hot liqiuds, the fish oil gives me the boak, so it has to be with food...you get the picture. I need a chart drawn up! Plus I think my favourite tipple of wine isn't doing me any favours in the ulcer dept....I love a nice glass of white. This is just one big process of elimination...pardon the pun

Coalfire,

Are you doing the anti - fungal programme? Have you cut out certain foods. Seems we are both starting the 'natural / herb' approach at same time.

I'm not really following any plan, I'm hopeless when it comes to discipline. I can't tolerate bread unless its white, anything else just bloats me out, big time. I started the caprylic acid due to pred incuded oral thrush and its cleared up nicely. I am trying to cut down on sugary /yeasty things and eggs don't agree with me for some reason. It's weird how the pred and the pred enemas didn't make any real improvement. Suppose once I get my scope I'll have a better idea what's going on. I'm pretty sure it's distal colitis or even proctitis, but the GI was very vague and just said he wasn't convinced it was colitis at all. Maybe a grotty polyp? Who knows...

Are you following any specific diet your self?

Like you I have a problem with discpline! But I am trying to cut down on dairy, fried, sugar and yeast. I have a suspicion that red meat may cause me problems. As you can see taking many supplements. Basically I'm trying to make my colon a very clean place to live in!!

I use Custom Probiotics six strain blend which includes acidophilous. I think it's played a big part in my recovery. If you have alot of active inflammation, you may want to start any probiotics slowly and carefully.
