I stumbled across this link. It's an interesting read about how one woman (a scientist!) abandoned meds and conventional wisdom and controls her colitis by other means.

http://www.theibdpages.homestead.com/home.html

I'm drawn to her quote at the top of the page that the great breakthroughs in modern science occured when people didn't take the "established view". I wonder how many experts at the time taught that what Edward Jenner was doing was crazy!

If you look somewhere and can't find a solution, maybe you need to look somewhere else. Or as the (european) Nike advert goes "First you believe. Then you succeed".

Well I see you're new to the boards.

There's nothing new in that link that hasn't been gone over and done by alot of people already. Diet has helped alot of people go symptom free and heal.

Eric,

I know I'm new to the boards and yes I realise a lot of people have discussed these issues on here. I simply found an interesting website that I wanted to share with others.

You are both more than welcome. We hear so many bad stories about IBD I just think we don't hold onto the good ones enough!

Yep, thanks, interesting to read the list of herbal stuff. I've been thinking about Slippery Elm, might just try that as well! And its reminded me to take the Milk Thistle that I bought a while back

UC Veteran,

Yes it's an excellent site isn't. I'm very new to this site (as Eric has pointed out!) so not the best to advise. What I'm gonna do is go visit a herbalist or a homepath and show them this list and see what they say. I didn't realise how many herbalists are out there and how easy it is to get these products in health shops.

damo : I found this link helpful as well.  Thanks.

uc veteran : Do you really think it is a good idea to list your support of political candidates in your signature?  Do you think that is appropriate and relevant at all to UC issues?  What if we all did that?

Interesting link! Thanks!

UC veteran- I have never heard of your candidate- I'll look him up.

KJ35- I don't have a problem with you listing your political affiliation. This is a plave where all are welcome to share thoughts and ideas. It doesn't mean we have to agree.

Kelly,
Read rule # 10 of the forum rules. No politics. We get enough of this everywhere else. No need for it in a UC forum.

I took slippery elm for six months or so. It seemed to help pretty well. I don't bother buying it anymore because it's pretty expensive and I don't think I need it.

I'll definitely agree with diet... and I'm all for sticking to your diet as long as you can... long after you're in remission. I've been symptom-free since January of '07 but I'm staying my version of the SCD until January of '08 before I start to introduce other food back in.

Thanks for the link, damo. Good info.

I, too, have been on diet similar to SCD. I have been on anti-fungal diet and it seems to be helping/working. Just afraid to say anything positive..'cause one never knows with this disease.

My God I can't believe how people get so uptight over every little thing!! It's like that no matter where you go in this world. Can't believe it bothers you so much that you would say something. You need to learn to relax. I don't read anybody's sigs, you know why? Because I don't care!! I think you should be able to put whatever you want in your sig. Does my sig. affect your life in any way shape or form?? Mind your business and think about getting yourself well!! Life's too short.

I started this thread to talk about alternative healing for UC. I'm really sad it has turned into a political argument. I find UCveterans reaction very distasteful. This site is about UC. Some of us don't really care about american politics. There are much more important things in the world. Indeed some of us aren't even Americans.

<sigh>

I agree...but I didn't start it. I was right on topic when this guy attacks my sig. Right or wrong? We're talking about alternate healing and this guy is changing the subject on something that has nothing to do with him or anybody else. Isn't that distasteful? Okay, now back to the topic. Has anybody tried Cat's Claw?

UC Veteran,

I really couldn't care less. I'd just rather talk about UC issues then try and figure out 'who started it'.

The reason there is a rule about no politics is because it distracts form the real reason we are here.  There are infinite sites throughout the internet to express your political views.  A forum for Ulcerative Colitis is not the place.

From what I've read there are 4 levels involed in healing the body. Different herbs do different things. You must for instance detoxify the body, then you must drain it etc. It's best to talk to a homeopath or maybe a person who knows about Oriental Medicine. Apparently you don't necessarily need help at each level. I'm a sceptic myself but I'm starting to believe there is a mind/body connection with my own UC. Its worth exploring each option for ones self. Nothing to lose!

I'm a big proponent of natural supplements for healing, combined with dietary modifications. Prescription meds have their place - especially when experiencing a major flare - but it doesn't have to be either/or. Both can work together for complimentary medicine.

I take probiotics to replace good gut flora, l-glutamine for gut healing, fish oil caps for inflammation and digestive enzymes.
