I was taking a high dosage of Prednisone for two weeks with absolutely no results then took just one day of Canasa (mesalamine, USP) 1000mg Rectal Suppositories and the flareup is GONE!!!!!!!!  I've been suffering with this current flare for 6 months now!  I've been taking two a day along with the other meds but can it be just good timing or are these just the right stuff?  So far it's been 5 days with a complete turn around.  Anyone else have success with Canasa?

I've had help withe Canasa, but it didn't work that fast.  It's probably the combination of the two.  Mine took about 5 days before I noticed a big improvement.  But hey, if it's working, keep your fingers crossed that it will continue to help.  Good Luck.

Your flare won't disappear after one suppository. It could be that the pred has just kicked in and the rectal inflammation is being helped by the canasa...

or am I misreading your posting that you're still on pred?

What dosage are you on at this time?

You're as well on the asacol, metronidazole, steroid enemas (twice daily) AND now started the Canasa?

I'm puzzled why you would think that it was just the Canasa?
Although...I'm a huge 5ASA "fan"....but I wouldn't give it that much credit.

Would you clarify what exactly you're on.

it's great you're feeling better, however...you haven't tapered pred yet.

Chances are, if you were on a high dose of pred for 2 weeks, then you were/are still on the pred while taking the canasa and it's more then likely the pred kicked in for you...pred is a funny drug, it can kick in after one dose or take many doeses/weeks to kick in, or even not kick in at all.

Are you still on the pred? and at what dose were you on the first 2 weeks and are on now?

Glad to read that you're finally getting relief. Steroids have always acted quickly for me when I desperately needed them. How long have you been taking Metronidazole? This is a drug to beware of because it can cause peripheral neuropathy!!!!! My gastro said in a public forum last yr that IBD patients should not stay on it longer than 3 months max for that reason!!!!! Good luck with your treatment & best wishes for continued progress to remission. / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC; currently on 3 X 3 Colazal daily for July flare in descending colon, which is responding)

John,

I am getting the same results (relief after a 3+ mos. long flare) but with a different drug:  6-MP.  I've only been taking it for 2 weeks so I know it cannot possibly be giving me this relief alone - I don't think?  But I am also still on Prednisone (9 weeks and counting) so who knows.................I'm baffled, but pleasantly surprised!!

Best wishes for continued healing!
