hi everyone--

i usually hang out on the lyme forum but i have a history of bowel issues and have recently started having some disturbing symptoms that seem like they could be related to ulcerative colitis.

basically about two weeks ago i started having rectal irritation, which then turned into this mucous discharge....it feels wet in that area all the time. i went to the ER and they just referred me to a GI doc...said i have excess mucous in my rectum. it is causing irritation externally.

i was dxed with IBS several years ago and went to some GIs then who were not very helpful....

do these symptoms sound like they could be related to ulcerative colitis or other bowel disease? does anyone have any suggestions?

thanks

julie

I'd go see a GI and have him scope you and run all the other standard tests....those are not symptoms of IBS, they could be from IBD but it's best to get it physically checked out, and the sooner the better.

I definitely think seeing a GI is the way to go. I have IBS in addition to UC. I have never had mucous w/ IBS symptoms. Did they give you anything in the ER medicine wise?

thank you all--

they did not give me anything medicine-wise which i was surprised by.

i guess i'm mostly wondering if others have this symptom of mucous discharge and if it is commonly seen with IBD....i know it is not an ibs symptom. i am not having any bleeding, and i don't really have diarrhea, just constipation.

thanks again--

Yes, I have mucous discharge with my UC. However, I also have had bleeding, really bad abdominal pain and massive diarrhea...but right before I started getting UC I had bad constipation for about 3-4 weeks with some mucous with my BMs, which was unusual for me. It doesn't really sound like the same thing you're having though.

I don't have IBS, so I'm not sure what the symptoms are with that.

I agree with the above advice...go see the GI they referred you to or at least a family doctor and see what they think.
