My 8 year old daughter started sulfasalazine this past Saturday and last night we noticed a very fine/faint rash on her legs and arms. We stopped the sulfa and are waiting for the doctor to call back with further instructions.

Would this likely be from the "sulfa" part of the drug (I get a rash from "sulfa" drugs)? Will she likely be able to tolerate other 5ASA's? Can you share your experience?

My son has taken sulfasalazine for almost 5 years now with no trouble.

Thanks!

Mom to son 15 and daughter 8, both UC

Hi...I don't understand why your kids are on a sulfa containing med rather than on the straight 5ASA anyway.

It could be the sulfa...but, it would be best for you to get the doc to switch to Asacol for your daughter if she has a rash. If they cause her the rash, it's definitely the salicylates that are the problem.

Keep us updated for sure.

I'm allergic to sulfa and so it my dad (he doesn't have uc took something else containing sulfa). Anyway I had my first ever migraine on sulfasalazine. My dad broke out in a rash from head to toe. Did you call your pediatrician? They may suggest benadryl.

Sulfa sensitivity is pretty common actually. I get anywhere from hives, welts or major intestinal pain. Did the rash disappear or start to look better after you stopped the sulfasalazine?
