Well I went to the GI today - I have been flaring for almost a month. He answer was double the asacol and add canasa. Also, he told me that anytime someone with UC has a flare up, they should submit a stool sample to check for a certain bacteria. This surprised me because with my initial round of testing, there was no sample collected. I thought that may be good info to share. I'm curious if anyone else was told that? Also, any thoughts, suggestions, or tips for canasa? I haven't done that before.
Thanks!

Canasa has always helped with me in the rectal area. Asacol just does not make it all the way. Canasa is basically Asacol that treats the rectum. When you are flaring the addition of canasa is an attempt to get to the whole colon. It gets much easier to insert it as you use it more. Lubricant is your friend!!!

I have periodically had stool samples done to check for c-diff. Not regularly though.

I have used Canasa on and off if I have a blip or think things are heading south. I lube it up really well w/ vaseline and insert it while on the toliet. I was petrified the first time but I promise it is not bad. You may want to wear a pantyliner as there can be some discharge. You will probably see a little bit of it in your stool the next day too....I freaked and thought it was more mucous!

Good luck. Let us know how it goes!

I haven't had a stool test in 14 years. Maybe my GI doesn't believe in that, I dunno! :) But the Canasa I think is the easiest of all rectal meds. I do it in bed, lying down and I have a bottle of hand sanitizer by my headboard. I don't have to lube mine up and I have had no troubles with it at all. Not even leakage of any sort. The next morning though, Tab is right, it does look a bit like mucous.

I have to give a stool sample every time I see the doctor with a flare. He always wants to rule out C-Diff.
