I had the most excruciating sore throat I've ever had in my life since last Friday. Normally I would never go to the doctor over a sore throat, but this one hurts so bad that I went last Saturday. The test for strep came back negative and the doctor sent me home and said it was just a normal sore throat and it would pass. Well, it got slightly better for a couple days, but today it is back at the severity it was the first day. My right ear and right lymph nodes also hurt/are swollen. I had a mild fever last Friday and Sat. but haven't had one since then. I am really tired though. So, I'm going back to the doctor tomorrow morning and he wants to check for mono. Anyone have experiences with this or have any good remedies to soothe my throat? Tylenol, lozenges and throat spray aren't working. I just tried some Aleve (I don't think taking it just this once will affect my UC) b/c I used to take Aleve and think it's superior to Tylenol. Sorry to complain...I am just really sick of being sick.

Sorry to hear you aren't feeling well. I had mono about 20 years ago. I remember being exhausted and sleeping all the time along with a strept-throat type sore throat that came on very suddenly. I had to take iron supplements and I'm sure an antibiotic, but can't recall. I remember I had to rest, rest, rest. I believe tea with honey and lemon helped, somewhat. Hope you get to feeling better! :)

I had mono when I was in 11th grade. I remember literally sleeping for days at a time. That being said I am the queen of super sore throats. I always try to tough it out and end up really sick. If your ear is hurting you may have an ear infection...as a mother of a child w/ chronic ones those can come on in a flash. I think it is a good decision to head back to the doc. Let us know what he says!

God...I frickin hate most doctors. Why do almost all of the ones I've seen suck at what they do? And they are rude, too. My PCP is gone on maternity leave and I swear every other doctor at that clinic is incompetent. This guy I've gone to twice now for this sore throat keeps looking at my throat and in my ear and telling me "yeah, they're a little red." A little? My tonsils are practically touching each other because they're so swollen and I can't even swallow my Asacol without gagging b/c it hurts so much to swallow. And this doctor keeps acting like he has no clue why my ear hurts. He said it doesn't look like an ear infection. He said I could take antibiotics if I wanted to b/c it could be strep (even though the test last Sat. was negative?), but he really thinks it's just a virus. I don't know how I am supposed to drink fluids and take my meds in the meantime because the pain is horrible. What if my throat swells up even more?

My mono test came back negative. My white blood count was a little high and I asked him if it could be from my UC and he looked at me like he had no idea what UC was. The nurse was clueless, too.

And I was waiting in the waiting room for an hour before I went up and asked them if the doctor was running behind or something (usually it only takes about 10 min. to get in there and everyone who arrived there after me had been called before me so I was getting pissed), the lady at the front desk told me they had forgotten to turn my pager on (they give us these little pagers that buzz when they're ready for us). She didn't even apologize or anything. She acted really snotty about it. Then I had to wait another 30 minutes. While I was waiting, I also heard them screw up 3 other people's stuff...they gave the wrong lab sheet to one elderly man, they couldn't find another woman's papers at all, they had the wrong information punched into the computer for another guy...

I had Mono about 18 years ago. I did not have too much of a sore throat just horrendous flu-like symptoms. I was as sick as a dog.

Good luck.

Sara14-- it sounds to me like you have a bad case of tonsillitis. It can be very painful & hurt into the ear canals, too. I had a bad siege of it prior to developing UC, when clinic doctors treated me with a succession of antibiotics, including Penicillin (allergic), Tetracycline, & Keflex 500. By chance I then got assigned to a South African doctor visiting the clinic, who advised me to gargle with hot salt water several times daily "because U.S. doctors prescribe too many drugs". That's how I finally got rid of the tonsillitis, no kidding! Worth a try as medical science still does not understand what purpose tonsils serve in the body-- so doctors usually want to remove them surgically after a point. Hope you can find relief soon! Drink as much water, juice, etc. as you can to help fight off the bug in the meantime. If you have mainly pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria present, the salt water gargle can combat it. / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC; currently on 3 X 3 Colazal daily for July flare in descending colon; should be back in remission in a few months)

Thanks, Old Hat. I've been gargling with warm salt water for the past few days (and with mouthwash for the past week, 3 times a day), so I will continue with that.

From doing my own research, I feel like I have tonsillitis as well. I am wondering why the doctor didn't think this? He only gave me a 7-day course of Amoxicillin and told me he didn't think I needed it anyway, but I'm taking it. I've never been on less than a 10 day course of antibiotics in the past. And he told me I could stop taking them once I start feeling better...most doctors tell you the opposite. It sounds like you were on 3 different antibiotics? If this is what I have, do you think the amoxicillin won't be enough? That's crazy the salt water is what ended up getting rid of it.

I feel silly complaining over a sore throat, but it really is quite painful. Thanks for listening.

Ugh...I'm sorry. Did you get the antibiotics? I had tonsilitis earlier this year (I have a 2 year old that brings home everything!). It is terrible. You hang in there. I ended up having to go on pred for the inflammation!

Is there anywhere else you can go doctor wise? Hope you get to feeling better soon!

Hi tjf. Thanks. Yeah, I'm taking the antibiotics (amoxicillin). I feel like the pain is getting worse. I am just trying to to swallow at all, but I know I'm supposed to be drinking lots of fluids. Did you take antibiotics for yours? I would be willing to take just about anything right now if it would make me feel better.

Yeah, there is one other clinic in town, but I haven't had good luck with them either. I could try to go in again tomorrow and see another doctor, but I hate to go in for a third time. I really like the PCP I have. When she gets back from maternity leave that will be nice.

Those dopes at the clinic should do a throat culture for you. That's what convinced the South African doctor that salt water gargles would work for me; fairly common bacteria showed up in my culture. / Old Hat

I just noticed I have little white bumps on my right tonsil.

They did a strep throat culture a week ago and it came back negative...but do they normally do other cultures as well?

I did go on antibiotics. If I recall correctly I had to do 2 different rounds of antibiotics and went to the doctor 3 times. I just couldn't get better.

I say give the antibiotics 48 hours. Hopefully you will get some relief soon!

Awww Sara I hope you start feeling better soon. Having a sore throat is horrible because it seems that is all you can focus on. I used to get reoccuring strep throats and tonsilitis until I had my tonsils out at the age of 30 (yes it is definately harder on adults!). Hang in there and hopefully the antibiotics don't mess with your Uc too bad.

Oh and if they didn't suspect tonsilitis when you went in the first time then more then likely they wouldn't have tested for it. Just strep because you can have strep without the white sores. My son had a bad case of strep but no white sores once. I hope you feel better!

Thanks Red.

I just called the nurse again and she said she's going to call something in to my pharmacy to reduce the swelling. Edit: It's called dexamethasone...she only gave me three 4mg pills.

She kept telling me the reason I still have pain is b/c I haven't taken Ibuprofen and that Tylenol and Aleve (which I've been taking) wouldn't help with the pain since they are not anti-inflammatory. But, I told her, Aleve is anti-inflammatory and Tylenol is a pain reliever. She also was trying to tell me that tonsilitis is only caused by a virus. How can the limited information I've gathered about this over the last week exceed my nurses' and doctors' knowledge? That scares me.

Please be careful with the anti-inflammatories. They may make you feel better but it can aggravate your Uc and possibly cause a flare to become more severe or bring one on.

Sara14-- they are definitely stupid at that clinic if they tell you that tonsillitis "can only be caused by a virus"! GADS!!!!!!!!!! The white bumps you noticed on right tonsil sound typical of bacterial infection-- they are likely pus. That's what's hurting! I agree with Red_34 that you should not take NSAIDS for pain relief due to their potential for aggravating UC. The Q now is whether Amoxicillin will act against the infection; I hope so. Please keep us posted & take care. Rest as much as you can & drink plenty of fluids. / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC; currently on 3 X 3 Colazal daily for July flare in descending colon; should be back in remission soon)

Yeah, I stopped using the Aleve...it wasn't really helping any more than the Tylenol anyway.

It's day 3 of the amoxicillin and my throat isn't feeling better. It's all on the right side. In addition to the white bumps I noticed a ton of white pus/mucous on this bulge behind my right tonsil (not sure what it is, but it's not on the left side). Yesterday, they gave me a steroid so that I could swallow, as I could barely swallow at all. That helped a little, but they only gave me enough for one day and today it's worse again. I can still barely swallow. All I can eat is really soft foods and even that hurts.

I've been drinking lots of tea, gargling with salt water and mouthwash and have been sleeping/resting since Friday. Sorry to complain, I'm just worried about this and I really can't miss any more work.

I had to get a tonsillectomy!

I just got back from the hospital this morning. I went to the emergency room Sunday night because my whole throat was swelling up. Then I went to an ENT Monday morning and he told me I had a peritonsillar abscess. I stayed overnight in the hospital Monday night, had the surgery yesterday, and left this morning. It was my first overnight stay in the hospital and pretty much my first surgery (besides removing wisdom teeth in high school) so it was kind of scary, but everything went well. I'm in a lot less pain now than before the surgery. I have very little pain at all right now except when I try talking a lot.

So far, no UC symptoms from all the antibiotics and painkillers I've been given. I've been on IV antibiotics, 3 times a day for the past few days, morphine and tylenol with codeine for pain, and now I have to take Augmentin for 10 days. I actually haven't had a BM since Sunday, which is kind of a nice break from going so much. I had this really bad urge to have a BM though immediately after I woke up from the anesthesia. I was still in the post-op room and they wouldn't let me get up yet to go...they offered me a bed pan, but I didn't exactly feel comfortable pooping with 4-5 other people in the room so I held it for half an hour. And then, when I could go privately, the urge wasn't there anymore. It was weird.

I am extremely tired so I better go rest some more.

Aww Sara, sorry you had to go thru that but I'm sure it was for the best. I had mine out at 30 and I barely remember the recouperation period because I was on liquid narcotics for 2 weeks. I do remember this one time my husband made dinner. It was chicken and he forgot about my tender throat and added pepper to the chicken. Oh wow was that pain intense! You take it easy and I hope the throat gets better soon.

Thanks, Red. My doctor told me to take a week and a half off of work, so hopefully that will be enough time to rest and recouperate. How is your recouperation from your surgery going?

Sara14-- I'm so sorry you had to go thru such an ordeal. Unbelievable!!!!! How long will your PCP be on leave? It seems like someone in authority should get after that clinic for the crummy care they gave you that led to the emergency situation. In your honor we should start a new thread on History of tonsillitis among UCers ... that was my big health issue before UC developed & Red_34 reports suffering  it, too, so there are likely many others who've been in our boat. Best wishes for your recovery! Take care & please keep us posted. / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC; currently on 6 Colazal daily for July flare in descending colon; should be back in remission soon)

Wow Sara...it's much better you had them removed rather than keeping them in that state.

It sounds as though you're already on the road to recovery.

I had tonsilitis a few times when I was younger, I really wanted to get them out..but because they weren't a continual problem, the doctors refused.

Take it easy and gets lots of rest!

Keep us posted as to how you're doing.

Thanks, Old Hat and quincy. My recovery is going well. I haven't had a lot of pain and the Tylenol with codeine the doctor gave me really helps when I do have some pain. I am on a soft food diet for 2 weeks and have been drinking lots of water. Mostly, I am really exhausted all the time and feel weak and get dizzy/light headed sometimes. I've been sleeping and resting a lot.

Old Hat - That would be interesting to start a thread on a possible connection/history of tonsillitis in UCers. I had never had any problems with my tonsils prior to this abscess, so it came as kind of a shock to be told I need my tonsils out. I'm not sure how long my PCP will be on maternity leave. Hopefully, I won't have anything else major happen for a while. =) The ENT I went to was good and very nice and all the hospital nurses and staff were great, so that renewed my faith in the medical profession. =)
