I am currently tapering off prednisone. I am at 5mg. I have been on it for over a year. I can't just taper and not do something different or add some other treatments because I'm afraid to go back into a flare without prednisone. Yes, my body is dependent on it, but I need to get off it. Ever since I started tapering my stools are a lot looser and the a little mucus came back.
I am curious what some people in remmissioin think or know what got them there and is keeping them there. I really want to hear from people who have had severe symptoms and are totally off prednisone. I would be satisfied by just hearing one testimonial and treatment.

27/M/TX
Severe Colitis (pancolitis) since January 9, 2005
currently:  I can honestly say Under Control now after 1 yr flare.
RX/day:  20mg prednisone; 2400mg Asacol; 150 Azathioprine
OTC: Acidophilus Pearls; seldom use vitamins & other natural treatments
FYI: Began SCD diet 5/1/07 and caprylic acid-UC improved dramatically.

I don't consider myself a succesful pred taperer but I can tell you that pred withdrawl can have symptoms that mimic UC. So, you can expect diarrhea, fatigue, fevers, etc. I can't tell you how to differentiate between an increasing flare or pred withdrawl but your GI should be able to help you. You are wise to try and get off of it. Even at low doses continual use is not a good idea.

I think when a lot of people get to your point they try Remicade. It's the only thing that has gotten me off prednisone. I now feel like I did before I came down with UC.

I was on and off (mostly on) prednisone for 2 1/2 years.  I slowly tapered off the prednisone and my GI raised my Asacol dose to 4800mg/day.  I take 6 in the morning and 6 at night.  I think I was more around 9 tablets a day and he upped it to 12 tablets a day.  For me, that was all it took and I experienced remission for about 2 years.  However, I am now flaring and am using Canasa suppositories as needed.  Think positively!!  I know, for sure, that is much easier said than done, but good luck.
