My current flare up has lasted 8 months now...  I went to the states to get married and have honeymoon for the whole month of July. When I got back and saw my doctor ( as I had not improved ), he said they found out some new information regarding ulcerative colitis...

Studies show that UC may now be caused by a bacteria, fusobacterium varium.  They use antibiotic combination therapy to get rid of it...   and it has worked in all the clinical trials.  and once it was gone it has not yet come back. So far all trials have been successful.

this is the link to one of the medical articles about it:

http://pt.wkhealth.com/pt/re/alpt/abstract.00001716-200504080-00011.htm;jsessionid=GMVQp5BfjdvyhMx1MvyS2h7M8SdxLqJDGHryklGWC43fJjvGmzNj!-362743511!181195628!8091!-1

My doctor gave this antibiotic combination therapy to 3 of his UC patients, including me.  It completely worked for one of them, and the other guy and myself had a different reaction.  All colitis symptoms completely went away while on the antibiotics. Once off of them, 2 days later the colitis returned.

I am currently on the 3rd day of my second round of antibiotics.  It has worked for so many people, that I am convinced that it will work for me.

The only problem is the side effects of the antibiotics which include tummy cramps and diarreaha and a general feeling of crappiness.  NOt fun, but worth it for 2 weeks if it gets rid of the UC.

You should look into it or ask your GI Dr.

Good Luck!

One of the antibiotics is Flagyl.

Just wondering, what dosage of these does he have you on? Like 250mg of xxx 3 times a day.. etc. etc.

Interesting - this article is dated April 2005 - I've read various people taking Flagyl on the board here. I think it helps some and not others. I'm sure we will get some good feedback on this.

i've heard as well about people on flagyl, but they were on that antibiotic alone. THis is an antibiotic combination therapy. 3 types. i am currently on methonide (metronidazole) (flagyl) 400mg 2x a day. vibromycin (doxycycline) 1 tablet 2x a day and amoxicillin 1 tablet 2x a day. I guess the 3 together have a different effect than just the flagyl alone. i have a mate in the california who did the 2 week regimine and it worked for them as well.

now on day 3 of this round, all colitis symptoms are gone. i only go once a day and there is no blood or anything. i feel fine until about bedtime and i gety crampy. only thing i have now is a bit of diarreha from the antibiotics. but thats it. so that is a nice treat. i can go out in public and not have to scope out the toilets first thing! which is very pleasant indeed. =)

Im crossing my fingers it works for me this 2nd time around. so far it seems like a valid treatment. nothing else has worked for me so far. i do take mesalizine 2 500mg tabs 2x a day as well. had prednisone in the past, never for more than 4 weeks at a time. enimas havent worked either. ive been on budesonide (which is super spendy), aloe elite pills, vsl #3 and countless other things. ive got a stubborn case of UC that just likes to stick around. so, this better work. i will keep you posted.
