After and eight day stay in the hospital, I was diagnosed with Crohns. Ugh. I'm heartbroken.

Actually UC cannot develop "into crohns" or vise-versa, misDX is more likely what happened...TamTam see the reply I left on your post about "skin tags".

Kanditron :)

I'm sorry about the change in your DX, I have crohns, sounds like you have it pretty bad in the colon (aka: crohns-colitis) if they initially DX you with pan colitis (aka: UC inflamming the entire colon), because typically with CD there are skipped patterns of healthy tissue and with UC it's more common that one area will be completely inflammed, so I hope you're able to get the severity under control and hopefully it won't start to penetrate the many layers of the intestinal tissue, as it's also typical for CD to behave that way as well.

Hi Kanditron~

I went through the same thing you are going through now.  It is heartbreaking, I know.  So many people don't seem to "get" that, so I wanted to let you know that I DO.  It was really hard for me to have my dx changed to Crohn's.  For me, it was like being told I was sick all over again.  So many people tried to reassure me, and tell me that it really wasn't any different than if I had UC, but the truth is that it is different.  There are more complications, and you no longer have that "surgical cure".

I guess what I am trying to say is it's ok to be heartbroken for awhile.  You kind of have to go through that whole greiving process all over again.  At least I had to.

Kitkat- thanks.
I never gave my self the time to deal with being told that I have UC.. I just shrugged it off and went about my life with medications and doctor appointments added. But I'm having a hard time picking my self up from this one. After watching my aunt deal with it all of my life I know what I can expect with time and I'm just really scared.

You're welcome.  You will pick yourself up again.  There's nothing wrong with being upset about it first though.  :-)

Kanditron, I've been here on HW for a while and I've seen a handful of people get their diagnoses changed. They were just as heart broken as you because they realize that the surgical cure is not an option anymore. I watched my mother suffer from CD so I know it's not an easy road. The best you can do now is dust yourself off, take your meds/supplements/etc as required and try to lead a normal life as you can. Don't dwell on the what ifs and try not to think about what your life with Cd holds. Think about the positive things in your life as of now. Hang in there and remember no matter which board you frequent now, Crohns or UC, that we are here for you.

Kanditron:

I understand your heartbreak and I am so sorry that this happened to you.

Hugs,
